And the new classic is..............a 1991 Saab 900 LPT in Citrin Beige (it's a rare colour I'm told).

MoT until the end of April next year, 3 previous owners.

159,000 miles with full service history, comprising a fully stamped service book with handwritten notes from 1991 up to 2003 and paperwork and invoices from 1998 to date. All service history from Saab main dealer or Saab specialist.

Comes with the usual sagging headlining and a little rust on the bottom of the doors. There's also a small amount of rust on the passenger wheel arch but she cleans up lovely and drives perfect.

And the price?

£475!

Yes, I know some of you probably think I'm mad, but I really don't care :-)

thats a lot of car for the money, no doubt about it.

pity about the federalised bumpers ;)

You're mad CW, no seriously, does it bring back all the good memories?

Yeh, it does bring back the memories.

I actually prefer the ride of the Saab over the Volvo. I found the Volvo too hard.

I do like the bumpers! It's nice to have a car with 'proper' bumpers rather than these painted things that you can't bump.

>> 159,000 miles

Just about run in then!

Seriously, I can't imagine it will wear in any significant way in the next 10 years. Although it looks as though your rear number plate is delaminating...

That was mentioned as an advisory on the last MoT. I'm going to get new numberplates because I want Euro plates for Euro trips.

Cracking. Want one.

Lucky it didn't go for scrappage.

That's a real cracker, Chris. I've been a fan of Saab's since my father owned one in the 60's. I might actually get around to buying one sometime!

Hope you have lots of fun with it CW, its nice to be different i believe and its good to have a car you cherish rather than just a user mobile

Pleased the excursion went well.

I couldn't get, but might think on for next year.

These things are usually on around the same time.

Like the Saab. Thank goodness for nonconformists.
I fancied a new one round about '91 but the local dealer apparently didn't think I was worthy of one.

Had three... a 99 and two 900's of this shape. The 99 was a turbo and brilliant... the 900s were standard carb engines and a bit slow/coarse.

Looks a good tank of a classic and from the images seems very presentable. Quite a lot of spares/tech info support from the Saab club/s on the net too.

Actually the new classic must be the black Vauxhall Nova Diamond on Autotrader for £3500!!!

I kid you not.

SWMBO wanted one of these for her first car. It was the only car she had an opinion on really. We only looked at one however - a non turbo five door auto which was lovely apart from the rusty door bottoms which needed new metal letting in. I think the car would have been about 12 years old when we looked at it. Really was built like a tank.

She ended up getting a Volvo 440 instead. Ideal car apart from the dreaded "Hi Tech" (read CVT) auto which juddered.

There are a couple of Nova comedians on there this week. Even 250 bhp worth of bored out C20XE doesn't make a Nova worth £10,000. I don't doubt that's what the individual spent on it, but it ain't worth anything like it.

Hello all,

Just thought I'd update you, the Saab has just passed it's first MoT with me, first time pass, no work needed.

Couple of advisories - nearside front anti-roll bar has slight play and nearside / offside rear suspension component mounting prescribed area is corroded but not considered excessive.

So how much has it cost me so far?

Full service just after purchase - £145.69
Small service plus new water pump in February - £209.52
MoT (plus front and rear Euro number plates) - £82.75

So, not too bad at all and I reckon I could easily get the £475 back that I paid for it, but I'm not planning to sell.

Any issues? The gearbox is a little notchy, finding fifth gear can sometimes be a little difficult (possible selector issue?) and she doesn't like cold weather (she's a little hesitant and lumpy when cold but runs fine when warmed up).

I'm getting married next Friday and we're going to Cornwall for the Easter Weekend and then Brugge for the Royal Wedding weekend so we're going to put some miles on her!

Thanks, Chris.

I would get that seen to now, while its still not excessive. With some hard work, kurust, and some underseal, you can get that sorted for next to nowt.

Thanks for the advice, with getting married and moving house this year money is a little tight, but as you say, a little money spent now will save money in the future.

Nice car, I had one about 9 years ago - something different, hope it proves to be reliable for you.

Nice looking example.

My wife still wants one, preferrably one that looks like a VW Polo Harlequin.

I had the later 900 based on the Cavalier platform, fine car for mile munching absolute carbage in the corners.

Nice car Chris, good to hear it's going well for you.

I've got the Cavalier based model at the moment gmac - had it a few months and it's been faultless up to now. Fuel consumption's a bit eye watering (I do well to get 30mpg on the way to work) but it's got a combination of reliability and comfort which more than make up for that.

>> absolute carbage in the corners.

gmac, with 'carbage' you have coined a useful new word for people like us. Congratulations!

Deliberate, or a happy accident?

I'm not some carphound ;-) who would claim other peoples work as my own.

Sorry to disappoint AC. I thought everyone knew Top Gear's phrase usually referring to something that looks like it has crashed through a Halford's window.

AshT, the Cavalier based 900 can present some eye watering bills. I had the V6 auto., averaged 26.9mpg regardless of how or where driven, the lowest price main dealers service I paid was a tenner shy of five-hundred pounds. That was late 90's with a 20% discount card as I'd bought the car there.
