Why didn't they put the loco in neutral and get it pulled by a freight train?

Report doesn't say where it was being taken from/too. Googling suggests it's normal home is on Llangollen Railway which, IIRC, is not connected to the main line.

A steam loco being hauled dead isn't something you can just drop into a scheduled freight service, even if one runs to right places. Trying to find a path for it through the congested core of UK rail - anywhere near a major city or on freight arteries to the ports of Felixstowe or Southampton for example - would be a major logistical exercise.

Far easier to entrust it to a specialised outfit that moves outsize loads for a living.

Then you can be sure nothing will go wrong.

Probably got a tank-engine-slapper on. No point getting steamed up and railing about it.

Maybe truck driver was a sleeper. In which case he'll be fired.

Did the driver had a tender behind or was that the next job?

Sorry to be a Whistle Blower but

Actually its easier than you think. Its called VSTP - Very Short term Planning. Take the rods off (unless its got fire in its belly & steam lubricated, can't have pistons moving) and get a rail freight operator to tow it.

Wherever possible move by rail, Locos dont like the bending forces involved in pulling up lorry ramps.

What would be max speed a steamer be hauled in that state? Not saying it's impossible to move it by rail just that I suspect there are plenty of pinch points. There's enough NR/LUL rolling stock moved around by road to suggest hauling it over main lines isn't always the answer. Must be a year or three ago but recall waiting to get out from Sainsbury's while all four cars of a Silverlink liveried 321 went by on separate loaders. Must have come from Siemens Northampton depot.

And of course if you start/finish on a preserved line that has no connection to the NR network then you need a low loader anyway.

There are, but they are only pinch points at certain times of the day. Speed? The Steam rail car from didcot was towed to Southall along the Great West Main line, throughout the, then much worse, pinch point of reading at 20 mph. Cant count the number of times I have filmed dead or light steam locos towed diagonally across all the four main lines at Southall east junction* (that includes fast heathrow connect, heathrow express, FGW express 125's, FGW Suburban.

* the same movement that was at the heart of the Southall Train Crash

There's enough NR/LUL rolling stock

Old LUL stock out was road hauled and rail hauled, New LUL stock in is always towed by rail, DRS class 20's from Derby. LUL has its own liveried main line licensed class 20.

Every preserved railway HATES not having a main line link, and where ever possible strives to get one. The Great central is hampered by lack of one, and is frantically fund raising to "bridge the gap" Mostly it means they struggle to get guest locos on site, and can't be a destination terminus of a main line rail tour.
