Just as I was beginning to think my newish car was slipping into middle age, I put its VIN into one of the decoder sites and found it's only just marked its first birthday. Another site confirmed it: it was built at Regensburg on Wednesday 29 February 2012. Perhaps an unintended career in piracy awaits. Arrrr!

I wanted the build date because I'm curious about its clutch, which can be very sweet when cold but, once warmed up, will sometimes judder quite unpleasantly when engaging the lower gears. Four-cylinder diesel E90s are supposed to have had a revised clutch from mid-2011 to resolve a problem that sounds similar. I can't find much about six-cylinder cars like my 325d, perhaps because most are built as automatics.

Anyway, y'know, just wondering. In any case, its service indicator has turned red, presumably wanting me to book it in, so I can add it to the sticking headlamp jets as an item for attention. The dealer and the BMW warranty have been very helpful over minor problems so far. It'll be interesting to see what happens if this is a more major one.

...we'd have delighted Mr and Mrs Retired Bank Manager next door, who'd have thought we'd adopted their his-and-hers model. They have a C and a B in matchy-matchy grey. If we'd got an A to go with our E we'd have had, between us, the first four letters of the MB alphabet. Can you see how wrong that would be?
