I have a 2.2 DCI "THE Race" On a 52 - depite having just gone past 116k, but on its 4th engine - I was informed by a car electrical expert that this range of vehicles weren't actually made by Renault, but by another firm and just badged as a Renault - is this standard practice - I feel like its being sold "everest " double glazing and being supplied by Zenith or worse.
My problem now is that a few weeks ago I noticed the headlights were flickering, then the right one stopped working completely shortly followed by the left one - hence the electrical guy - he stated that the "ballast??" was trying to ignite, but failing and he was investigating if it was a known fault or what he might be able to do.
Renault diagnosed the problem and said 2 new headlights would be required at circa 1200 each, which would just about double the cars value - any suggestions ??

Renault used to have Matra build/make/assemble the Espace and yours was probably one of the last models that they relied on Matra for. But it's still a Renault when it came to warranty etc.
Sounds like your HID lamps have gone and need a costly replacement. Ouch... but if it's just the ballast did the electrician suggest just changing the ballast?

Try www.renaultforums.co.uk/ - perhaps there's a knowledgeable person there.

Renault are joking with that price for replacement HID headlamps. You can get complete OEM HID headlamp units with balast, controller and bulb for BMWs for around 400 Euros online. I can't believe they would be much different for a Renault.

Why not just replace them with the non HID equivalent. Bound to be cheaper even if the whole assembly is required.

BMW X3 is made by Steyr in Austria
Porsche cars assembled in Finland SAABs were built in Finland by the same co prior to GM
Vauxhalls built by Suzuki
Fords built by Fiat
Toyotas built by Subaru in US
Lots of cars have surprising roots - not just Matras badged as Renfaults

There were Ford Escorts sold in Sweden with Renault engines and these were built in South America.

I think you will find that these are built in either Zuffenhausen or Leipzig.

Porsche have a manufacturing agreement with Valmet of Finland to build Boxsters there when the demand is too high for Zuffenhausen to keep up. The agreement ends in 2012 when Valmet will be replaced by Magna Steyr.

sound like you're in danger of having an electrical fire.
Total loss.
Only joking :)

Porsches from Finland
Wikipedia tells us-
The Porsche Cayman is a mid-engined, rear wheel drive 2-seat sports car produced by Porsche AG of Germany. First launched in the 2006 model year, the Cayman is a coupé derived from Porsche's second generation Boxster convertible. Like the Boxster, most Caymans are assembled in Finland for Porsche by Valmet Automotive (the rest are assembled in Zuffenhausen near Stuttgart, Germany). Porsche's Deputy Chairman, Holger P. Haerter confirmed that their contract with Valmet Automotive will end in 2012, and the Cayman's production will be outsourced to Magna Steyr Fahrzeugtechnik of Graz, Austria. (Panorama, 2008

I was fortunate enough to visit both the German Porsche factories - Zuffenhausen and Leipzig - a few years ago. Leipzig was pure Cayenne (Carrera GT production having stopped by then). At Zuffenhausen there were very few Boxsters going down the line, mostly 997s. Therefore they must have been building quite a few Boxsters in Finland at that time.
I was also driven round the Weissach test track in the then new 997 Turbo by one of the Porsche test drivers. Superbly scary, to say the least!

Thread drift alert.....................
Anyway hdi headlights could kill if you arent careful so if OP does consider going to standard lights and goes the diy approach then proceed with caution

How can it have needed four engines?

I think I would have given up after the second one!

I apologise you learn something every day never new about the Finland connection, the Leipzig factory produces VW,Audi and Porshe 4x4 I was there this week car factories are fascinating to look round.I live about a mile from the VW pheaton factory
in Dresden and its all glass with a large glass car storage tower its wonderful to watch them assembling the cars .Occassionally they bash out a few Bentleys but I think that is when Crewe can't manage.
