Don't think she'd a hope in hell of seeing the hole given darkness and level of flooding. A major burst like that will scour out the foundations of the road allowing the carriageway to collapse. Weight of car was enough to trigger the collapse - hence perception of being sucked across the road.

Mistake was to drive into a flood of unknown depth.
