Next Yaris a Mazda? - Old Navy
I initially read about this a couple of months ago, to be built in the US and Brazil. I doubt if they will do more than a superficial restyle of minor bits and pieces when the new European Yaris is released in 2017(?).

Well hopefully they'll sort out the looks, and in a hatchback form I'm sure it'll look better.
Never sure why little cars are popular overseas in a saloon model? They don't have much more space and they ugly as anything.

Gawd that's fugly..!!

Saloons more popular than hatches just about everywhere except the UK - no idea why!!

They work on big cars, but on small cars they look horrible.

Wasn't there a saloon (and possible coupe?) version of the Seat Ibiza many years ago... I though that looked okay?

I don't know why either, but a distant memory from my childhood comes to me. It was when my dad decided to buy his first Volvo ( 144 ) and he mentioned that he'd maybe go for an estate this time, having had a series of saloons ( not Volvos )

My mother was dead set against the estate idea despite the fact that he would have found it much more useful. Her argument, thin though it seemed to me as a 12 year old, was that saloons were seen as much more upmarket.

He took the line of least resistance and bought another saloon but it stuck with me for years to be puzzled ( and slightly disappointed ) by her view.

I wonder if that attitude still pervades in some countries?

Folk are odd sometimes aren't they?

Well they don't make an estate S Class Merc, estate 7 Series BMW or estate Audi A8, so perhaps the logic is, by association saloons are more upmarket?

Odd though isn't it? The very thing that makes an estate more useful, is being big.

I try not to think about it.

Audi did do a 'concept car' A8 Avant for some motorshow or other:

Would have thought that the next Asia-Pacific/European Yaris will use Toyota's modular platform (TNGA) as used in the new Prius.

I think one of the ugliest cars ever was the old Vauxhall Nova saloon. An old guy who worked in the same office I used to had one. Pale blue thing, and he was called George. Wore a Trilby hat when he drove it.

I can't see a small saloon without assuming that the driver is called George and would probably wear a Trilby if his wife let him.

Edit- George was an accountant.

Late FiL had one, in eyesore red. For him, the ideal car had a huge boot, never mind the looks. It was echoingly empty 99% of the time.

Was he called George and was he good at sums?

Was that the weird two door one? Or am I imagining that one?

This is like George's one...

Nice.
Actually i think it was the escort that had a 2 door estate. That was odd looking, popular with painters and decoraters i would think. A friend used to have one, god knows why.

Wasn't the Allegro estate only a two- (or three-) door too? Perhaps something to do with the body not being strong enough for any more holes.

My uncle, my father's brother, bought an Allegro when they first came out. I can remember my dad trying to find something nice to say to him about it but sort of giving up and deciding to say nothing much about it.

I recon it will be another badge engineered car from the world wide generic parts bin. Lots of them around.
