Driving to Hillingdon this morning on M40, just after Junction 2 (Beaconsfield) traffic ground to a halt & gantries displaying "A40 eastbound closed" message, thought this could take a while, expecting to take an hour plus before I could get off motorway onto alternate route.
Cause Fatal road accident on Denham stretch
But after about 20 minutes, in which I had almost reached M25 junction (a distance of maybe 1 mile from the start of the stationary traffic, the traffic started to move.
When I passed the accident, which had been in the inside lane/hard shoulder, several police vehicles, fire engine etc was on the hard shoulder, all hidden behind screens to stop the gawkers and traffic was moving normally, ended up getting to Hillingdon station only half an hour later than normal.
So IMHO well done those responsible for dealing with the situation quickly and efficiently and getting a major route into London back to normal while presumably doing all that had to be done in the circumstances

Can't help thinking screens would save a lot of the disruption that follows an accident on a major road. How would it be if the central reservation barriers incorporated pop-up screens that the emergency services could raise to block the view of drivers coming the other way? Might prevent the rubbernecking whose effects we're all too familiar with.
French motorways have fixed, flattened posts on the central reservations that make it hard to make out vehicles on the opposite carriageway (and make Yellow Car more difficult to play.) I imagine their main purpose is to reduce headlamp glare at night, but they may help with accidents too.

These are fitted on a couple of bends on the A90 between Edinburgh and the FRB.

"Can't help thinking screens would save a lot of the disruption................... "
I must get some sort of periscope device fitted to the car.

Ask ON - I presume his car already has one.

Of course it has, it gives the impression that I am driving a Chelsea tractor. :-)

I don't think VOSA have anything to do with clearing up accidents. Investigating commercial vehicles involved in them, perhaps.
Highways wombles are the usual sweeper-uppers in these situations.
