>>When I first started driving petrol was about 75p...A gallon.

When I first started driving petrol was 4s 8d a gallon = just over 5p per litre.
Road Tax was £12.50 IIRC

In Saudi Arabia in 1970
10 US gallons (say 40 litres) was 10 Riyals (10.6 approx to £1.00)
so approximately - so about 10p per gallon = 2.5 p per litre for premium (88 octane!!!)

I see oil is around the $35 mark overnight. So using Duncan's historic petrol price chart and the historic oil price chart here www.macrotrends.net/1369/crude-oil-price-history-chart, the petrol cost (pence per litre) in the same year as which oil has been at that price were

1989 40.9
1997 67.2
2003 81.1

I suppose there's many other factors, not least exchange rates and tax rates but it does seem to be slower coming down than it often feels going up.

Three and a bit gallons for a quid for me. The Raleigh Runabout did about 100 mpg.

No idea about MPG, it'd do two months to the gallon.

I quite like Morrisons, nothing to do with the quality of the petrol bit I like the "pay at the pump" system which allows for a quick getaway.

I use Sainsburys fuel mostly. Nectar points y'see, and at my 35-40 thousand miles a year they add up nicely. Must check those come to think, we normally get something reasonably substantial with them at Christmas.

3s 6d a gallon or less, if I really think back.

The first 'oil shock' in the seventies was mismanaged by the oil companies and govt here, and there was a petrol and diesel shortage, with long queues of miserable London motorists waiting sometimes overnight outside London garages.

Black cabs had their own arrangements which seemed to work as usual. And (bear with me) so did we minicabbists: by quickly forming corrupt relations with the forecourt people - mostly women - and paying extra for our juice. That enabled us to bypass the queues just like black cabs and buy as much petrol as we wanted, not be rationed like less privileged ordinary punters. Naughty I suppose, but jolly handy of course. Can't say I felt very guilty about it.

I'm quite old really and can remember as a small child prices in the 1/6d region. But 3/6 is about what we paid in my early days of motoring.

Of course I also remember black market petrol, Americans lavishing nylons on my glamorous aunt (not to much avail I like to think), stuff like that. Billy Hobbs whose mother was 'fast' so got rides in jeeps and packets of gum from glamorous gringos whose military uniforms were a lot better than ours.

I envied Billy although he wasn't a bright boy, and didn't understand all the sidelong looks from our mothers about his mother. She was smiling and blonde, what was to dislike?

the 1973 fuel crisis, ration books issued but never used. Mostly because high pricing did the job
 under a quid a gallon - CGNorwich
I think probably a bit later. According to the AA chart price din't hit 49 p per gallon until 1974. I don't think formal rationing was ever impose but most garages limited how much you could buy.

They did issue ration books in 1973 although they were never used.

I've still got mine somewhere. I got a slightly higher ration having a 14 hp rated vehicle.

They were left overs from the 1956 Suez crisis rationing, which may even have been in turn left over from the war.
I do remember the 1956 rationing, because I was then living on a farm with ny uncle and aunt, and my uncle got a higher petrol ration, and I think unlimited diesel.

I guess Esso don't price match anymore, which explains why Tesco in Abingdon is 8p cheaper for petrol than the Esso garage is. They are literally a stones throw from each other.

I wonder how many people are gutted to have filled up at Esso, then drive round into Tesco to do their shopping and see it's 8p a litre cheaper? IIRC diesel is 5 or 6p a litre cheaper too.

And none of this silly argument that Esso fuel is far superior than Tesco's. I've seen a Tesco fuel tanker many a time filling up the Essso tanks on that site.

The fuel or Tescos? I'm probably wrong doing it, but I normally fill up with Shell where possible, normally their V Power unleaded. I drive so few miles that I cannot remember what I put in last fill up, so there is a chance it's mainly V Power I use.
It is always more pricey than supermarket fuels, but I don't really care for the reason stated above. I might save the cost of a pint by filling up at Sainsburys, but I have this stupid notion that apart from the higher octane rating, it's better for my old ( ish) car. Of course, I could be completely wrong, and wasting money, but until someone gives me conclusive evidence then I shall continue to do it. Just one of my many peccadillos !

>> The fuel or Tescos?

Esso and Tesco fuel. Well not crap exactly, it just petrol. Shell does however does make the car feel smoother, slightly better pickup,

under a quid a gallon - bathtub tom
I heard recently that these super petrols contain no ethanol. It's becoming a major problem in old vehicles as it eats natural rubber and has now been found to dissolve old solder (think brass carburettor floats). It also contains more water than petrol, so that as the distillates evaporate, water's left behind to attack the steel in petrol tanks.
If you don't do many miles, you could be doing yourself a favour buying the expensive stuff.
 under a quid a gallon - VxFan

I think they are but BT's point related to older cars - hence mention of brass carb floats etc.
under a quid a gallon - bathtub tom
Yes, sorry, I was just thinking about older vehicles, although even with plastic tanks a build up of water isn't something you'd want.

Old petrol tanks, particularly motorcycles, used to have a coating on the inside. Ethanol's been found to break that up too, resulting in bits of material clogging fuel filters and blocking jets.

Piston engined aircraft fuel (91 octane unleaded and 100 octane low lead) is ethanol free. I suppose motorists have to put up with the muck as cars don't fall out of the sky with a fuel problem.

Marvellous what you find out in a day at Beaulieu.

Petrol has dropped to 52p/l over here albeit for the 91RON Aussies seem to think is acceptable, petrol snobs like me are paying 57p/l for 95RON.

I have actually compared my Outback brim to brim on 91RON and 95RON and the additional mileage from a tank almost exactly matches the price difference. It seems smoother and torquier but that's probably just psychological. So I run it on 95RON and visit the petrol station slightly less often although when away from cities only 91RON and 98RON are stocked by many servos.
 under a quid a gallon - No FM2R
I think its about 60p here at the moment for 97RON so about 55p for 95RON.

How much is diesel per litre in Oz, I_C?

My sister is on a plane to Oz as I type, well she's about to land at Bangkok for a stopover. She's going there for 4 years and is taking a Volvo XC70 D5 on the plane with her. Also bought an old Subaru Forester (petrol, natch) as their second car which is waiting for them on arrival. When I go to visit in the next few years I'll get a lend of the Forester, can't wait. Never been to Oz.

She's on Malaysian. Gulp.
 under a quid a gallon - idle_chatterer
Diesel has remained constant over the past few weeks/months at about $AU1.20/l which is 57p/l. It's rarely less than petrol but then again not much more either.

Interesting she's taking the Volvo with her, there are strict importation rules with duty and taxes which make importation a hassle. Volvo are a premium brand (with luxury car tax) so the saving may well be worthwhile, I expect she'll have done her sums, IIRC owning the car for more than 12 months prior to importation helps.

One comment, if she has a tow bar it might not be type-approved, A/NZ have their own standards (which are similar to the US) and swan-neck retractable tow bars aren't fitted here.

I've a couple of friends and colleagues who live in Canberra, they all love it, you can cycle to work, there's lots of cultural activity and it's all very logically laid out, the ACT government is more progressive than others too. Reputedly a great place to bring up children, but it is very insular and a tad synthetic IMHO.

Prices vary wildly in W Sussex, and into Hampshire, IME. It's £0.999/litre at Tesco, but as I'm 11 days away from 2 years of not spending a £1 in their stores I wont be going there ;) My local Esso is at £1.029, and Shell £1.069. These are all within 3 miles of each other. I think the BP/M&S on the A27 was at £1.089 yesterday...

But since Shell take Apple pay, and give airmiles (OK, they're Avios now...) that are effectively trippled by using AMEX via paypal, and they have a man that'll actually fill the car while I sit inside, and it's the one I pass most frequently, I'll continue going there...

Not really that difficult to do. On the A420 into Swindon, pass one Esso garage, just before Sainsbury's at Stratton, pass a Texaco garage on Fleming Way while heading into the town. Pass another Esso on the Rodbourne Road while nipping around to my cousin's house. Pass another Esso garage on Kingshill Rd while nipping around to my Uncle's house. Then finally heading to Tesco (Ocotal Way) to do some shopping before heading home.

Also having a photographic memory for numbers helps too.

Seems silly to put in very small amounts, unless there's an immediate cash problem... those are often more imaginary than real.

One doesn't want to be stranded, but it's easy to be obsessively over-cautious.

We always fill up when it gets under a quarter of a tank but cut it a bit fine this morning.

Unless usual process has been suspended it's either not below £1 everywhere or some way below in some places.

Consistently 3-4p/litre cheaper at Sainsbury Fosse Park (Leicester) than in Northampton.
Diesel under a quid a litre - Old Navy
Diesel is 99.9p at the supermarkets here, but I have seen 105.7 today. No doubt it will go up the second the oil price gives a twitch upwards.
Diesel under a quid a litre - smokie
Oil up over 3% today, partly due to the Saudi/Iran issue. Brent is traditionally costlier than the US stuff but they are running neck and neck for the past few weeks.

Many of the pundits I'm reading aren't expecting it to be back to anywhere near previous levels for the foreseeable though.
Diesel under a quid a litre - Crankcase
Sigh. Put some in today, not at the supermarket. Tank was very low and I was not sure I had enough to get into town and out again to Tesco tonight through two sets of sitting about in gridlock, so had to call in at Cambridge BP. So I paid £1.10 a litre this morning.

I'm sure it's better stuff though, as it will have Magic BP Elixir in it and my car will go 50% faster and run 50% smoother and travel 50% further on a tank. No doubt.

 It's cheaper!!!! - Old Navy
Gave the car its weekly top up this morning, petrol 99.9, diesel 99.7, diesel cheaper but only just.

Still over four quid a gallon. :-(

Steadfastly staying at 103-106p around here, but I haven't been past a supermarket forecourt recently. I only use Shell in any case and use their nitro gubbins fuel to lubricate my injector pump properly (they have a tendency of failing on my SAAB and cost 2k to fix), also Avios points you see.

>> Steadfastly staying at 103-106p around here, but I haven't been past a supermarket forecourt recently.

99.7p for both at Asda Lower Earley if you fancy a trip to the Dark Side. Although probably similarly cheap at Tesco in town.
 under a quid a litre - Alanovich
Used to go past every day Shinfield-TVP, but now working in Amazingstoke so no supermarkets en route Cav Heights-Shinfield-Basingrad via Spencers Wood/Hook. Sticking with Shell nitro anyway on the off chance that it'll make a difference to the car's injector pump. Heavily leaning towards keeping the car and sorting the gearbox at the moment, although the box is refusing to die and functions fine on the flat.

The missus usually fills the Mazda with unleaded, and she just waits till the light comes on, waits a bit more, waits a bit more, waits for the needle to drop below empty, panics and fills up in whatever the nearest station happens to be.

EDIT: forgot a vital step in the female fill-up procedure - arrive on forecourt and call me on the mobile to remind her how to open the fuel filler flap. Staggeringly has never managed to misfuel, so now I've said that it'll happen next time I expect.

Size of a gallon depends on whether you are in UK or USA.

1 UK gallon is approx 1.2 US gallons....

I filled up with unleaded at 99.9p on Tuesday...£37 ....at Sainsburys. They are owned by Qatar where the fuel will cost you around 12p a litre. I used to fill up my Honda Legend there for £3.50.....

IIRC its supplied by volume but converted to weight for load/balance calculations. One of the holes in the cheese that lined up to allow the 'Gimli Glider' 767 fuel starvation accident was a miscalculation of litres to kilogrammes.

Just filled the Roomie with diesel at Tesco, 99.7p/litre. Petrol is 99.9.

Third time I've brimmed it and according to fuel app on my phone it's averaging 47.78mpg. Pretty good I think for mostly commuting but with longer runs to LHR and Liverpool.

Pretty sure I could get it over 50 if I learned to feather my right foot a little.

We went to Sheffield today. (Meadowhell!)
Looking at the fuel prices, most seem to be around 102p to 103p, plus the obligatory 99p, per litre for unleaded.
Our local Sainsbury's in Worksop is 99.9p per litre for unleaded, so a bigger market does not necessarily lead to better prices.
A week or so ago, we filled up at a Tesco site adjacent to the A14, just outside Needham Market, for 99.9p a litre, on which we are still running.

Looking at it from another angle, I would prefer fuel prices to double. That would probably make a huge difference to the price of certain equities i hold. And to the values of many thousands of private pensions. Fortunately my private pension pot is pretty small, but I expect others with maybe six figure pots have taken a bit of a hammering these past few months.

Manatee, your'e actually quite right.

I must have found comfortable leisure shoes a problem in my late teens 'cos I was taken by the advertising for Nature Trek. Bought a pair from Schofield's in Leeds and you know what? they did what it said on the box. Took some ragging from flatmates over my 'pasties' but I could at least walk a few miles in them.

Not sure what the nature trek>polyveldt lineage was but Mrs B had a pair too when we first met. Became a shared joke and the word 'Polytreks' is still in our collective vocabulary.

IIRC there were city trek too with a more conventional upper and which led on to the 'Air Wear' concept today.

Liverpool and back yesterday in the Roomie sorting stuff for t'Lad. Since Northampton has long seemed to be pricy fuel central amongst conurbations and I'd got 300 miles still in tank when we left a bit of surveying seemed worthwhile.

Conclusion is pricing seems all over the place. The supermarkets all seem to have petrol and diesel at around 99.9 with diesel occasionally 0.2p cheaper ie 99.7p/litre. At filling stations though many prices still well over £1. No consistency whatever as to whether petrol cheaper than diesel or vv. Gaps as wide as 3-4p either way.

Eventually filled up at Fosse Park but price there at 99p/litre for both fuels same as Northampton - for all of last 8yrs it's been 2-4p/litre cheaper.

>> Asda have a national pricing policy. I think Morrisons do as well

Asda do, but I don't think Morrisons have followed.

Word on round locally is that absence of an Asda filling station in Northampton is reason we're usually paying that 2-3p litre more than in Leicester.

Morrisons arrived here in mid nineties on site of cattle market and subsequently took over Safeway megastore. Matched Tescoburys but never equalled their prices in Yorkshire where Asda was the benchmark.

I ate a whole bag of wine gums tonight while navigating the joys of the M5 and M6 on a Friday. No idea what they cost, my wife gave them to me this morning, but they were very good. I'm partial to a wine gum. You can make sort of cocktails with them too if you eat them in pairs or even combinations of three.

Felt quite hedonistic at times.

My closest Shell has been 99.9p for both for quite a few days now. Surprising really as there is no supermarket competition for maybe 10 miles. There is another Shell about 2 miles away which is at the same prices as all the other garages round here - 103.9 for petrol , dunno about diesel

I do think they are making it up a bit. The price of US crude has been bobbing between about $28 and $34 for some weeks now. www.nasdaq.com/markets/crude-oil.aspx?timeframe=1m

Today is up a bit but yesterday it was down. As I understand it, market fluctuations don't necessarily follow the crude price that quickly, because of forward buying etc by the oilcos. And certainly the pump price doesn't vary as much as the crude price.

There are still analysts out there who think oil could go below $20 this year... just a week or so ago when the sanctions on Iran were lifted people were predicting an even worse over-supply than there currently is.
