Looking for a trade in price for a VW Golf, 60 plates, 1.4 petrol S model with 40k miles on the clock.
Its for a friend, Motorpoint told us as it was over 2 years old they would just send straight to auction and use the CAP / Glass price guide.
Webuyanycar are saying £5k, waiting for my friend to text me back but am sure the trade in offered was less than that.
|
Assuming its a 5 door, good condition, cap says £5050 trade in.

Thanks
Almost worth keeping as a second car and buying a cheap 5 door Focus

It's a bit painful having to face the true value of one's car. I've just part-exed mine (2012/12 C220CDI BlueEfficiency 7G-tronic AMG Sport+ estate, 72,000 miles) and was happy with £11.5k. Time for another username change.

It was spot on with the price I got for my car last year and similarly with what I paid for its replacement.

Seconded. I checked mine and it was a good £600 too optimistic.
By the way, are you dabbling in the car trade Zero? How come you've got access to CAP? It's not cheap, and neither is Glass's.
|
You can get a free valuation from Glass's
www.glass.co.uk
You need to register.
|
That CAP link is fine as long as you don't mind the marketing afterwards.

well you don't put in your correct name and address and usual email address do you?

Then you open up the interesting "information wants to be free" debate.

Their trade-in price is 3k too optimistic over what I was offered just a month ago by two dealers, both of whom in turn were offering about £250-500 above webuyanycar.

Gulp! People are so put off by high miles realtive to age.
May I ask, if you bought new, might it have cost less to lease than buy? I've just bought a new car and am having serious doubts that buying it was the right thing to do.
|
So, Dave, what did you px it against? We need to know (says the man in his 6th year of Octavia ownership with little prospect of change)
|
Legacylad - here's an idea. Garage the BM convertible until the spring and get yourself a practical hatchback runabout for winter and family duties. Something with a bit of style, but frugal... How about an A3 diesel? ;-)
|
Dave TD is after big money wheels now as he has flogged the Merc and the Morgan :)
|
Yes indeed Dave, we need to know. If only so we can suck our virtual teeth and tell you that you've bought the wrong car. You know how it works !
;-)
|
Wisebuyers is way optimistic, although I'd happily accept that the part ex price for my lexus is now a few hundred more than I paid for it from a main dealer 7 months ago

Well... Seeing as my slipped disc isn't getting any better and I'm finding it more and more painful to get in and out of the Merc (and virtually impossible to find anything comfortable about the Morgan) and my chiropractor recommends a seating position where my knees are no higher than my pelvis, e.g. an MPV, 4x4 or van.
At work we have a succession of 4x4s on some kind of rental deal, used for towing the race car trailer to VIP events. I've tried everything from a Shogun to an Amarok but one car stood out for its comfort, economy and specification. So I've bought a...
2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland CRD. In red. Picking it up tomorrow.
Before you lot start, it's closely related to the outgoing model of Merc ML350CDI.

A pal had one of those, an ML 350 that is. Loved it. He has a Cayenne now, likes that too. He has a bad back as it happens and wanted a sitty uppy car.
|
Well... Seeing as my slipped disc isn't getting any better...
...my chiropractor...
Hmmm.
|
>> Hmmm,
Hmmm indeed WdB. I've been to the guy four times in three weeks but he seems to be doing more harm than good (pins and needles where there were none before, plus other issues) so I won't be pursuing that course of action. Got an appointment with a consultant next week to discuss options.
|
Good move. Wouldn't be making any hasty decisions about the car either.
Disc injuries are usually self-limiting; the consultant who treated mine told me 90% or more clear up by themselves when the bulging portion of the disc breaks off, breaks down and stops pressing on the nerves - as mine then did a couple of weeks later. (We had got as far as discussing surgical options.) It's hell till that happens, of course, which makes us susceptible to offers of help from charlatans - who will then claim the credit when the thing sorts itself out.
My Saab went undriven for eight painful weeks but was then as good as ever (although its offset steering wheel may have been a contributory factor, fifteen years as a pace bowler probably had more to do with it.)
Hope you won't have to wait too long for an improvement.

Thanks. The disc's been a problem for three years now; I put up with it for 8 months before having an injection on the NHS, followed by another two privately at 10-month intervals. MRI scans have showed the prolapsed disc to be in much the same state each time.
I've always found the Mercedes' AMG-style seats to be most uncomfortable, but gift horses and all that. Enough's enough though, after two years and 60,000 miles it's time for a change.

Jeez that's even lower than WBAC are offering me!

Dunno why they are higher, I can go and buy your car at a dealer for 12,900.

Apologies, WBAC price is £11,215, I had read it as £11,715 initially!
|
>> Jeez that's even lower than WBAC are offering me!
WBAC are notorious for offering a good headline price and then reducing it when you arrive at the appointment, for any minor scratch etc.
|

I also understand that if your car is in the same condition that you declared it to be, then they do not reduce the price.
|
I didn't think you'd had that car all that long Bobby? "No likee no lightee" or is it that time has passed more quickly than I remember?
|
Two years Humph. Car now 3 years old and needs a new clutch at £700. Debate ongoing whether dual mass flywheel needs done as well which is another grand.
Hyundai washing their hands of any warranty claim or goodwill gesture.

dint you knack the clutch and flywheel in the Altea as well?
|
New clutch at 39,000?
Blimey.
|
Further to above, I've no idea whether any of them are any good or not ( never had a clutch let go ) but I've at least noticed specialist clutch centres around. Might be cheaper than main dealer rates, and you'd think anyway, that if that's their speciality, that they'd know how to do it well enough?
Pity that though, seems an awfully low mileage to have a problem of that nature to me. Seem nice cars too.
Thought about a Qashqai, ( if you're looking for something similar) ? If I was buying one now, I'd most probably go for one with the 1.6 Diesel engine. Supposed to be good I gather and very frugal.

Flimsy mirrors tho I hear. reports of blowing off in the wind.

That was the old ones. I'd think they'll have fixed that now.

....designed out the gatepost?

There was some discussion either here or in t'other place about one such chain. IIRC conclusion was:
(a) It's a franchise with all that implies for variable quality etc
(b) You probably don't get OEM/Valeo or other quality parts
(c) Some of the techniques for doing the job quicker than 'book' were not compatible with doing it properly.

Problem is if you haven't had it from new you don't know how it was treated before you bought it. Trust me I know people who can destroy a clutch in a few thousand miles !

Hers a left field thought for you Bobby.
Dacia Duster and some change from yours...

Money left over for some good shoes?
|
Aye that's a good point !
I'm half churning over the thought of a Duster for "her", she likes the look of them and I like the price of them. I just need to get some more ointment for my Renault allergy before taking it any further.
Probably just superstition given that ( I think anyway) they have much the same oily bits as the old Qashqais and I've no reason to fear those.

But the important thing is whether the mirrors are better fastened on.....
|
Indeed so !
( could we maybe just leave the mirror thing now? Pretty please? )
:-)
|
What's a 'mirror' Humph? Is it that thing at the top of the windscreen you can wind your worry beads round, or is it one of those things hanging down the front doors on frayed bits of wire, clattering annoyingly against the coachwork at any sort of speed?
Most well-appointed modern cars have both sorts.

Leave it? where would you like - Car park? Hedge? narrow bridge?

Heh heh ! You didn't used to write the scripts for Bond films did you by any chance? ( before you bought a campermotor thingy) I can almost hear Sean Connery shaying that...
;-)
|
....funnily enough, it has been shaid in the past that I shound a bit like Connery (and look a bit like George Best - probably as he is now) :-(
|
....no, god forbid ;-)
(....and George Best was cremated) :-(
|
...whilst going further OT...an absolutely true story.
Last year, whilst wandering round Tarbert on Harris, a fella in a kilt walked up to my wife and said "You're a very lucky woman! That's one fine handsome man you've got there."
Being Scotland (but not as we know it), I'm sort of 50% convinced that drink was involved.
...SWMBO on the other hand, is 101% convinced.
:-)
|
Oh ok, it was just a hunch, you sounded like quite a decent sort of chap. Sorry, my mistake.
Apparently I sound exactly like Andrew Marr, which is strange given that he's a Glaswegian and I'm from Edinburgh ( originally ) and that I look almost exactly like George Clooney, but hey someone has to I suppose, sniff...
;-)))
|
...'shallright.
Shomewhere in the dim distant past of my forebearsh there'sh a bit of Caledonia; but we don't like to talk about it, don'tcherknow.
;-)
|
I like the look of the Duster, capacious competent unpretentious jalopy. My trouble is that I can see virtues in any car almost. It sometimes ends in tears or at least curses.
|
It's the sort of thing I'd buy if I was ever in a position to retire. That and a map of Africa...
;-)
|
Force yourself back to HJ and look at the owners' reviews for the Duster!
|
I do sometimes John ( in very mild disguise )
But yes I should read them before parting with any money. Good point.
|
>> Force yourself back to HJ and look at the owners' reviews for the Duster!
Very positive they seem to me.
It's a good-looking barge too. Worth undersealing or whatever unless you are a rich executive who gets a new one every year or two. Then you can leave all the rust faff to second and third hand owners or nth-hand owners like me, who won't do it well if at all.
Ashes to ashes. Rust to rust. KnowImean? Radical dependency is a humiliating but almost universal condition.
|
Yes the Altea had a new DMF fitted and this was the ultimate downfall of the car!
I had reported a strange noise when on full lock and setting off and Arnold Clark decided it needed a new DMF fitted under warranty which they did. However this didn't cure the problem and I would need to search back to find out what it turned out to be but it turned out to be something totally minor.
However subsequently the casing on my gearbox fell apart which resulted in me having to get a new, secondhand gearbox. This was as a result of AC severing a bolt in the casing when they had refitted it after changing the DMF and they then covered it up to look like it was fitted properly but actually wasn't.
Although I knew they were the only ones that had ever been near the car, I couldn't prove that to them! To be fair to Seat they were very helpful even though it was out of warranty and when it transpired that the gearbox breaking had resulted in the belt hitting and severing the Air Con pipe, they gave me a full new pipe free of charge.
