Parked in the lane outside our house this morning - a freshly minted Fiesta on a 65 plate. Nice alloys showed off the rear drum brakes a treat. Shocked that these were still being fitted in this day and age. Surely manufacturing economies of scale must make the savings on a car to be low end pounds.

Gosh yes I know. Only yesterday I saw a new car with cloth seats and what's more there was no sign of a built in sat nav or alloy wheels.

I was quite shocked.

;-)

Toyota Yaris is the same..
 Ford - 2015 Fiesta...Drum Brakes !! - Harleyman
Nothing wrong with drum brakes on the rear. For one thing it pretty much guarantees an efficient handbrake.
 Ford - 2015 Fiesta...Drum Brakes !! - Old Navy
My Yaris has rear drum brakes, it makes no difference to the stopping ability of a light car. Rear discs on most cars are for showroom attraction and make little difference to the brakes, they don't sieze and corrode from lack of use either.
 Ford - 2015 Fiesta...Drum Brakes !! - Slidingpillar
Indeed to the above, a small car with discs on the back is asking for trouble as the back brakes don't do much and corrosion will set in.

Hard driven sports car, or big car - yup, discs are ok.
 Ford - 2015 Fiesta...Drum Brakes !! - ....
Could be why Ford only equip the Fiesta ST with discs all around.
 Ford - 2015 Fiesta...Drum Brakes !! - Bromptonaut
Yup, my Berlingo has rear drums. Stops perfectly well. The newer one though has discs.

Older hydro-pneumatic Citroens with discs all round and a parking brake on the front wheels were prone to seizing at the rear if rarely driven fully loaded. Bit of ballast in the boot would keep the proportioning valve slightly open and ensure regular pad/disc contact.

Older Astras OTOH were prone to seize rear drums if parked up after a soaking.

That is why I sprayed the drums black ( rather than silver) on my daughters Yaris so the alloys were better defined :-(
 Ford - 2015 Fiesta...Drum Brakes !! - Old Navy
My Yaris came with black painted rear drums. Maybe an indication of the showroom attraction of rear discs is the diesel Yaris has the best performance of the range and rear drums, yet the petrol powered sport and hybrid models have rear discs.
 Ford - 2015 Fiesta...Drum Brakes !! - madf
Th Jazz has rear disks. No problem with corrosion in three years of driving. BUT lots of low mileage drivers do have.

(Hills and my driving style I guess mean they are shiny at front and rear)
 Ford - 2015 Fiesta...Drum Brakes !! - Zero
The under 100 bhp Lancer has disks on the back. Changed the pads once, but the disks (rotors) are 136k 8 year old originals. No rust there.

I wouldn't have expected drums to work well with ABS/ESB due to their heath-robinson mechanicals.

used to have ABS on the front wheels only back in the day.

Sure that's case with my 05 Berlingo, not sure about the newer one or the Xantia. The Xant's front ABS rotors were on the driveshafts, not sure how any rear system worked.

Haven't there been load valves on rear brakes for years so as to stop them locking in handbrake turn fashion?

Yes, but now superseded by electronic brake distribution (EBD) which uses the ABS sensors on each wheel hub to proportion pressure to each wheel.

Yes, but now superseded by electronic brake distribution (EBD) which uses the ABS sensors on each wheel hub to proportion pressure to each wheel.

Wonder how that works with a drum brake...?

Don't they all have TPMS now which tells them how quickly the wheel is rotating and averaged out over all four wheels, is it in tolerance or not ? Even more reason to rotate tyres.
 Ford - 2015 Fiesta...Drum Brakes !! - Old Navy

Why should it be any different to a disc brake? They are both hydraulically operated and my rear drum brakes car has EBD and a ABS sensor in each rear hub.
 Ford - 2015 Fiesta...Drum Brakes !! - ....
Do you have TPMS ON ?
*ON = Old Navy, not on.

No, but the car has vehicle stability control (VSC) which can apply the brakes to individual wheels.

The reason I asked was because my wife's Auris hybrid does not have it either despite being registered end of Jan 2015 AFTER the TPMS mandatory date BUT the car having a 2007/8 type approval date with minor facelift in 2013 does not require it as standard.

It appears Toyota do what they have to in order to meet the regs. and nothing more.

Same as most other manufacturers then. :-)

My previous Almera had rear discs and when the ABS operated you could feel it through the pedal and it seemed to work at a much higher frequency than my rear drummed Yaris, which just gives a 'locked' pedal feel. This was on wet grass. I don't make a habit of using ABS on the road for long enough for comparative reasons!

ABS has scared me a couple of times by being a lot worse than I would have been without ABS.

No doubt it's been the saving of many a poor boy, but I don't like or trust it.

The jalopy hasn't got traction control at the moment. I don't mind on the road, even in the wet, but muddy grass is another matter. Gotta be careful turning round in some places.

Tsk. Must run it past the bloke. Perhaps he can reset it or something.

>> Tsk. Must run it past the bloke. Perhaps he can reset it or something.

The jalopy has big discs all round, but the rear ones have small drums inside them for the not-too-brilliant handbrake.

I was surprised to see both the Spamettes' Fiestas (59 and 63 plate Zetecs) had rear drums, whereas SWMBO's mighty powerhouse 1.4 Meriva has all round disks.
 Ford - 2015 Fiesta...Drum Brakes !! - ....
Ford have a history of drums at the rear.
I remember the mid-80s Escort RS turbo having ABS and rear drums. Ah the heady days when 130 horsepower was a cooking model, of course all those hot hatches were in the 750-950 kgs bracket. A lightweight hot hatch these days is over 1.25 tonnes.

That was one of my thoughts. One of the first cars I drove with ABS was a Ford Escort. That had drums as well. Seem to recall that there was quite an in depth article in Autocar at the time, seemed quite an ingenious solution.
 Ford - 2015 Fiesta...Drum Brakes !! - bathtub tom
I believe one of the first cars with ABS was a Fiat Uno turbo.

Fiat recommended that if the ABS was ever activated the car should have its front wheel alignment checked!

From Wiki: An option on later first series Turbo i.e. models was called 'Anti-Skid' – a simple form of ABS that only operated on the front wheels and only once per ignition cycle meaning that if it was triggered during a journey it would not do so a second time until the ignition had been turned off and on again. Whilst it was an admirable attempt on Fiat's part at improving driver safety and reducing accidents, the 'Anti-Skid' system was largely regarded as ineffective and unreliable

The Granny was the first across the whole range in '86. Still remember the advert of the car swerving around farmer Barleymow coming off the field.

You reminded me...I had a go in one in '86...When was the last time you saw one...? All gone now I suspect.

I saw a Granny estate a couple of weeks ago parked behind a new Mondeo. I would say a Focus estate might edge it for space being slightly wider.

It must have been one of the last bug eyed ones.

2.9 6 cylinder with 195 PS and a top speed of 140mph which is where a 2.0 diesel repmobile is today.
 Ford - 2015 Fiesta...Drum Brakes !! - Falkirk Bairn
In the early 90s I had a 607 - combined rear disk brakes & hub containing drum park brakes. Seemed a good idea - the rest of the car was poor but the brakes & handbrake never gave any issues

The bug eyed Scorpio was a decent size inside, definitely bigger than a Focus.

Funnily enough I followed a 73 Granada GXL auto through Leighton Buzzard today. That looked smaller than I remembered.
 Ford - 2015 Fiesta...Drum Brakes !! - ....
There's 5" in the wheelbase 2770 vs 2648 in favour of the Granada.
The focus is 2010 wide vs 1875 for the Scorpio wagon.

The Granada might be bigger but it's marginal. Probably park a Granada in the boot of the new Mondeo estate.

Escorts from the 80's had a totally mechanical abs system that only worked on the front wheels. The system was driven by 2 toothed belts from the driveshafts.Take a look here;www.howacarworks.com/illustrations/lucas-girling-scs-stop-control-system

I think everything looks smaller than we remember compared to today's air bag and crumple zone infested cars. I followed a Mk 2 Escort Popular a few weeks ago, it looked like it was perched on bicycle tyres.

I took a photo of two FIAT 500 cars nose to nose a couple of years ago with my 7 year old daughter stood in between.
The original was half the size of the current car, my daughter towered above the original.
