Ford Focus - Value for insurance purposes - L'escargot
My insurer has just asked me the estimated value of my car to enable them to re-assess my premium. Where's the best place to look for the value of a 7 year old car?

Thanks Cheddar.

I've never had an insurance company ask this before. I always thought this was part of the renewal process the insurance company went through automatically. Totally pointless anyway since they will never give you anything like the amount should you claim! Do you really think it will make any difference to the premium they end up quoting you on a 7 year old Focus? I wouldn't of thought so, unless they currently have a very high (ie the new value) price still in their system?

£2K.

I crashed into a lorry a few years ago (his fault), and received the value I'd stated. Hastings IIRC. Quite pleased.

I got a 10% reduction in the nett premium for (a) stating the value as £2500, (b) stating my annual mileage as 8000 to 10000, and (c) stating that the car was kept in a locked garage.
I'm well pleased.

Bung the details into an autotrader search, and see what other people are asking for the same car (select the "More options" option). This will tell you the approximate replacement value.

The fact is that they will oly offer market value in the event of a claim though it is worth quoting a slightly higher than market value figure to make sure you are not giving them an excuse to pay less.

I thought insurance companies worked on trade values, if so auction sales would be the best check.

They have to give you what it costs to replace what you had. People will often accept less.

Of course it was. The insurance companies both said it was his fault. He said it was. It was.

I knew my sense of humour was going to get me wrong, yet again!

Pat,

When it comes to any criticism of a lorry driver, you haven't got a sense of humour.

Here we go again
(( shrugs shoulders and walks away))

But before I do, it amused me that FT stated HE ran into a lorry BUT it was the LORRY's fault. No more no less, as I'm sure everyone, including FT realised.

I'll leave you all to bitch away like an old washerwoman, IIH, hope it makes you happy!

It's a problem when a sense of humour in respect to a topic is perceived as an obsession. I am not trying to attack you when I say that. It does seem to be true that lorry drivers are widely seen as menaces on the road, and of course this is untrue in the vast majority of cases. Happy driving.

I'd sooner have a truck than a car alongside me on a multi-lane roundabout. Truckers are usually much more aware of what other vehicles are close to them than most car drivers.

I think they're much more aware, they just don't seem to care very much.
