I saw quite a few in Munich in August 2014.... For the money there are other cars I'd prefer. The sound (produced by the exhaust) does not tie in with the hybrid 3-cylinder petrol... it sounds great on full throttle. Staff at BMW World said it is really the exhaust and not 'artificially' created. Reply to this message | Report message

Mrs F was in the family village the other week and sent me an image/text of "an amazing car.. what is it" that she'd seen at the village fete. Soon realised it was an i8. Then by chance I walked back to the car in Tesco the other day to find one parked beside me... in sort of touring car race colour/decal scheme. Looked utterly superb. I was about to get the camera out and snap it when I saw a 60-something guy walking back in my direction and... rightly... guessed he might have earned enough to pay for that. Put the camera away and carried on unpacking the shopping as I didn't want to be a wannabe fanboy. What was truly amazing was something that looked that good pulling away with no sound. I mentioned in another thread that I was at the Nurburgring a couple of weekends ago for the DTM race and two I8s rolled in together to park up on the grass verge of the skanky back lane between the campsite and the track. Cheapskates!! Reply to this message | Report message

I see a number of these being driven around here...usually on the A55, the last was an all-green one, which apparently is a custom colour for the launch cars. They're either going to Ireland or the Ty Croes race course. Reply to this message | Report message

I was told it is not electronically enhanced - it is the exhaust that's been tuned to sound like that. I've driven VW GTD's with the sound electronically generated and pumped to the cabin.... In Munich on the day I heard the BMW i8 accelerate past it happened to be in a bunch of expensive supercars (well it was Munich) and it sounded as good as Lamborghini Gallardo's and Ferrari's that passed.
