Nice one...

I thought it was going to be a Ford Galaxy, and was interested to see how that'd been done. Then it turns out to be a 60s American car. And not a very pretty one, albeit a powerful one.

Bit disappointing really.

You would have preferred a not very pretty not very powerful Galaxy? The clue was in the spelling of galax_ _

"Rapid 7 litre Ford Galaxie" didn't make me think "not very powerful".

And of course I spotted the ie vs. y but initially attached no importance to it.

Looks fun. The steering wheel appears to be an optional extra!

Its a mere approximation of where the front wheels are pointing.

Interested to know which, if any, of those dials is the speedo!

I remember the parents of a school friend turning up in the estate version of one of those. What impressed me then was the split tailgate, and that it was only necessary to open the top (window) half to get his school trunk in.

I'm not that it had 427 cu.in. motor or the roll cage, though...

I can remember seeing those 7-litre Galaxies at Brands Hatch. Their huge torque made them very quick, as quick round the circuit as the much more athletic Lotus Cortinas. I think they ran with their standard 2-speed (heh heh...) automatic transmission. The Galaxies made a terrific noise, thundering great V8s. Can't remember who drove them even but they were very gung-ho, lifting front wheels coming out of the hairpin and so on. Side-by-side dicing at Paddock Bend, only for the brave.

Can't find many details, but I'm pretty sure there was a race in the BBC 100 Best Sporting Moments at the Crystal Palace track in 1971 where a super duel occurred between a Ford Galaxie and a Ford Escort (mk 1). Anywhere there was a straight, the Galaxie stormed past the Escort, and anywhere there was a bend, the Escort overtook the Galaxie.

Perhaps 4 or 5 overtakes per lap, exactly what the present F1 is criticised for not having.

It was a chevrolet camaro. I recall a newsreel somewhere of Galaxies and Mk1 Lotus Cortinas dicing it out in a similar manner.

That's it. This video has the "100 Best Sporting Moments" image at the start.

Here's the newsreel with the Galaxie and Lotus Cortinas from 1964.

The driver was lucky to get out of the rolling Mini relatively unscathed.
