We're planning on taking Mrs F's dad to look at some care homes in a few weeks time; we live in Reading, he lives in Daventry and the homes are in Gloucester (the latter makes logistical sense, honest).
He doesn't move very well, and it wouldn't be practical taking him in the A3. So the plan is to hire a wheelchair and a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) to carry it.
I've got a quote from www.adaptedvehiclehire.com/ for £95, including £24 for delivery/collection (from London I think). I've tried ringing local car hire places in Reading and Daventry, but can't find anywhere that does WAVs.
Any other suggestions?

Is Dad able to get in and out of a car without too much difficulty? If so you could try hiring something like a Ford Galaxy; others will be better placed than I am to say which particular MPV would be best. You could try your local Red cross for wheelchair hire.
That however seems a fairly reasonable price for a specifically adapted vehicle. You'd probably not be paying much less for an MPV.

Thanks H. Not really, although Mrs F is better qualified to answer that; I'll check later.

Yes, it's not too bad I guess. Ideally though we'd collect it at Daventry rather than drive it over there and back, but that added £100 to the quote as it would still be coming from London.

You could also try your nearest day care centre. They may loan you a wheelchair in return for a small donation.

Since you would seem likely to require a wheelchair again I would be inclined to purchase a lightweight travel model. You can get one from about £60

And as you will be getting the old boy out and about now and again, I'd get shot of the A3 as well while you are about it. Told you it was the wrong car.

He's pretty independent - it's only recently it's got to the stage where a home seems like the best option, but persuading him of that hasn't been easy. The first choice (and most expensive of course) home is more of a village where residents can move around and socialise, and they might have their own wheelchairs; don't know yet.

Stuck with it for another 2.5 years!

Don't remember that, but I'm curious now; will do some searching. No, it's not the best car for carrying OAPs around in, but that wasn't our top priority, and I don't think it should have been. Could have been worse - initially we were looking at A1s...

....in your area, the one that came to mind is this:
www.gowringsmobility.co.uk/short-term-hire/
...but it is unclear if they hire for less than a week.
Might be worth a bell, though?

Thanks chaps. Good point about the wheelchair; something else to check with Mrs F. Rang Gowrings - nope, 7 day minimum.

Is it feasible for the three of you to make a week of it? Cottage or hotel in the Cotswolds, and spend some quality time taking Dad to other places he might enjoy seeing?

For various reasons, I think not, but will discuss.

In the scheme of things that sounds pretty good to me.

Thanks - I googled them earlier, but there's the delivery/collection charge based on their Portsmouth location.
