90 years and they are closing

Other factories around the world inc Europe, will supply the tyres for UK market.

Sad time for many who have worked there for a long time.

Apart from the fact that it's a paid job, there's very little to recommend working in a tyre factory. It's a very dirty job and the workers have a higher-than-normal probability of developing bladder and kidney cancers.

Do they? What from, the rubber?

Dunno, perhaps, but there's a lot of powdered carbon stuff in tyres I think, to make them black. Tyres are 'cured' by being heated too, and there must be fumes. Even tyre fitting is an unhealthy job judging by the complexion of the old honcho in the place I used to go to in London.

There's one down here which seems better organized though. It's highly mechanized and automated and the blokes put on clean rubber gloves to handle the tyres.

i thought we stopped making tyres in the UK years ago.

You thought it was all over. It is now.

I knew we made tyres here because some Avons I bought a couple of years ago had 'Made in UK' on them, which surprised me no end. It's a great shame for the workers, especially as I understand the plant was still profitable.

I thought it had already closed a couple of years ago when Dunlop in Birmingham closed. As Dunlop and Goodyear are the same company, I assumed it was one and the same factory.

Visited a Goodyear tyre plant in the states. Producing truck and aircraft tyres. About 20K per day IIRC

Really surprising how manual the whole process was plus it was a nasty environment to be in. A few hours was plenty for me
