OK, not another tyre thread.
I've read Zero's thread of Black Circles being bought up by Michelin. I've been let down by reifen-vor-ort and Reifen.com in Germany, two of the biggest suppliers and between them they are arguing where my tyres are after a month. German efficiency at its best. While they faff about, I need some rubber.
I need some new Continental tyres, I would have preferred to switch to Goodyear but have a brand new Continental tyre after a puncture last autumn a couple of weeks before swapping to winter tyres, the other three are down to 2mm. Many will point out I should have just stuck the winter tyres on at that point and sorted out the full set over winter, but I didn't, so here we are. I'll happily bin the Continental or sell it on eBay if I can get a full set of Goodyear's for less if anyone knows of any Eagle F1 deals.
I'm going to be in the UK soon so, where do you get your tyres from now without being bent over for a distress purchase ?
Size is 235/40x18 weight index 95 for a 2.0 diesel family saloon.

I get mine here:

In fact I'll be phoning tomorrow to order a couple of Pirellis for fitting this week.
Prices are competitive and they are local so it's a no brainer for me.
They also have the latest laser alignment gear if needed.

+1. The only gripe is that you can't book, so unless you get there early (as they open), you'll queue for up to an hour. There's also no mobile signal whatsoever where they are.
But in terms of service and prices, absolutely no complaints at all. Been going there for years!
EDIT: Apparently you can book a "premier bay" although I suspect this is chargeable.

I agree they are excellent - the only place I've seen a production line approach to tyre changing.
I also go to Costco.

How did you get your Costco card?
Why do they seem to confine their membership to professional organisations, plus ex services, ex civil service etc?

I guess they don't want any oik turning up. Never bothered with them. the nearest one is several hour round trip.

Previously had good service from
www.camskill.co.uk/
&
www.bestbuytyres.co.uk/
With the former, unless things have changed, you'll need to find someone to fit them for you.

Last few times I've used etyres. Its a mobile only outfit, and they operate as a franchise so the quality can vary I believe. Not always the cheapest, but fitting at home / work is convienient
I'm lucky that my local fitter is a bloke in his 50's who used to manage a kwik fit, and decided to go it alone. Has held the franchise for about 10 years and says business is good
|
I've used Formula 1 this past couple of times. Good value and very efficient service.
|
I've previously used Black Circles and Mytyres with excellent results.
Last October I purchased 4 x Vredestein Wintrac Xtremes from www.oponeo.co.uk/ which were promptly delivered to my home and were fitted by an indie of my choice.

Thanks to everyone who replied here.
I wanted to see what was out there and what sort of price I might pay if I leave it until I travel.
The prices are roughly the equivalent of £1=1€ which means cheaper for me to have them changed in Europe with the £ being so strong at the moment.
This is not an oh look how much cheaper tyres are in Europe vs the UK, I wanted to see what I would expect to pay. Having said that, if the German tyre suppliers can't get their thumbs out of their butts then I may well have to buy in the UK. If the tyres are really there like the apparent lack of supply in Germany.
How hard can it be to buy some tyres ?

If you want to specify exactly the type and make of tyre you want, you go for an online supplier. If you want instant convenience, reasonable price and not that fussed about make you go kwik fit.
Either way its pish easy.

That's what I thought.
One month later, online supplier says they've supplied the tyres, please fill in the survey, nominated fitter says tyres ? What tyres ?

Don't dismiss the likes of Kwik Fit... My car was in for a service last week, and required 4 new tyres. Well, at least the rears were down to 3mm; the fronts a touch more. Mercedes quoted the best part of £800 for two 225/40/18s and two 245/35/18s. No, I dont know why a 2.1 litre diesel estate is so over tyred...but...
Anyway, I though that was touch expensive, and a quick google showed that Kwik Fit would do all 4, using MO spec Continental Sport Contact 5s (I think...) for a touch over £500 fitted, including balancing and disposing of the old ones. Fortunately for me (as the car was at MB) they were happy to almost match Kwik Fit, so I left it with them. I couldn't be bothered to collect the car and hang around Kwik fit for an hour to save the £30 extra MB ended up charging. Though of course they knew that, which is why the came in £30 more. I'm sure they could have matched if they wanted to, but why would they!!
|
Funnily enough Volvo use the Sport Contact 3s though I have two 5s on my car. Either way, they are very sticky tyres but run down very quickly if you have torque vector braking or whatever it is.
I have never had a car wear out the rear tyres as quickly as the fronts when it's front wheel drive.
|
>> I have never had a car wear out the rear tyres as quickly as the

The current model Berlingo does. In fact mine ran the rears out in 27k mile with a few mm still left on fronts.
Towing a caravan for say 15-20% of the miles may be contributory.
|
If I recall correctly our A4 convertible (2.0T and front wheel drive) also used to wear its rear tyres almost as quickly as the fronts. Mind, you it was quite a heavy car, which might have had something to do with it...
|
I will probably get 25k from the rears of my 2013 Berlingo, but no towing. The fronts were changed at about 19k following a terminal puncture, although they were wearing less than the rears. Seeing an earlier comment about 'intelligent' braking I wonder if the ESP? has any impact on additional rear wheel braking?
The bulk of my miles are not heavily laden, some people have suggested that the tyre wear is a function of a van designed rear suspension that is better suited to heavy loading, when combined with factory set (mis?)alignment. Poor tyre life is commonly seen on these.
My Picasso was still on the original rears at 51k when got rid at 6 years,

I think the idea of two different size tyres would annoy me more than anything else.
Why do MB do it?
I have the same/similar car, a 2.1 litre diesel estate, but mine has 225/55 r16 95w on it. Why the difference?
My car will need new rubber in the not too distant, where to go and how much to pay? The idea of buying them online and then traipsing round various back street tyre fitters to get them fitted fills me with dread.
I can hear the excuses now, if something goes wrong,
"Nothing to do with us gov, they were supplied damaged.
"That's a pity sir, but the tyre fitter messed up.
|
...225/55 r16 95W...where to go and how much to pay?
Then don't traipse. I didn't. Two Michelin Primacy 3s for mine were £260 through BC, fitted in a 40 minute stop near Heathrow on my way to work. Waiting room had coffee and wifi, so I could work as I waited. £260 the pair; less now with the fall in petroleum prices.
|
I used Asda Tyres last week. Ordered online and booked a fitting (in a one hour slot) at a local Halfords. Payment after fitting, not online in advance.
Easy peasy and very cheap for what I got - 4x 225 45 R17 all season tyres, B rated for economy and for wet grip, £52 per wheel. Bought on those ratings rather than brand name, they seem fine tyres so far.

Go on, tell us the name otherwise you know we will make up lots of silly ones.

This is a genuine make that a garage fitted to mine several years ago when I asked for the cheapest tyres they had. The usual ones they supplied weren't in stock (Pneumant) so they fitted a set of Flamingo's instead. No, they weren't as light as a feather either ;)
|
Don't stand downwind of the flamingoes at the zoo. The only sense they might appeal to is the eyes.
|
I live in South America, fool. I don't need a zoo to see a flamingo.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chilean_flamingo

...so you presumably know how they smell too. The scowly - not yours, I'm sure - was a curious touch for a quip about niffy pink waterfowl. Are there any actual flamingoes in this forum for me to offend?
|
Undoubtedly some flaming oes on this forum
And I won't say what the O stands for

Sailun Atrezzo Z4+AS 94W XL.
Not available on the Asda tyres site in my size now, I guess they had a job lot in which they flogged cheap - all season tyres being in higher demand in autumn/winter I suppose.
Got a bargain.

Not really. But so what anyway. Not sailing anywhere with B rated wet grip, which is better than a lot of "branded" stuff.
