... as I did today to fetch a couple of nippers from somewhere between here and Brighton, where they had been spending money like drunken sailors.

Seemed to take for ever, and involved a lot of waddling around on B, C, D and E roads. Even had to look at the damn map, and ask a bloke the way. Despite my mounting anxiety, reached the place (a village railway station) at about the right time and found the nippers smiling there with their loot after waiting, they said, only two minutes.

It was a bit easier on the way back.

Something started rattling and banging under the jalopy on the way down our very bumpy drive. Probably a missing/damaged rubber bush or similar. Sounds awful but doesn't affect the motor or its progress. But damn! all the same. God cars are annoying.

Might just be a broken exhaust hanger AC. Kwik Fit replaced one of those for me once for nothing. Took them about 30 seconds. Hope it's something like that anyway.

So do I Humph, but I'm afraid it's not. Had a few of those over the years, and this is different and worse. Can't see anything under there.

More likely some rear suspension link (there are many).

Herself has to use the jalopy tomorrow. We're hoping the AA won't have to be called. It's OK on smooth bits of road.

If it is just making a noise, the rear wheels are not misaligned and the car drives straight, it could be a roll bar link.

Ed China would know what to do. I've done something painful to my left leg and it was raining today so wasted quite a chunk of this afternoon watching re-runs of Wheeler Dealers on Quest.

I now know quite a lot more about fettling Mk 1 Range Rovers, Porsche 911s, Jeeps and VW Transporters. Ed is my new hero. I want his workshop and all the kit in it.

I remember being told about volunteering, our instructer said never volunteer, he said imagine you're being asked to pick up dog s*** with your bare hands. Enough to put anyone off it.

It is a pity he is teamed up with Brewer.

I understand the Ed China runs a servicing garage in Bracknell. My partner had her car MOTd there last week. She wasn't aware of the connection but got her MOT for £40. www.greasejunkie.com/

That's what I think it is ON.

And it was of course. Went to the garage today and they put it over the pit. To my surprise (because it didn't sound like that) the dead bushes were at the front, not the back.

I had some bushes and a nut and bolt of the right sizes in the boot as it happened. One of the garage man's sidekicks put them in, took about half an hour.

The bill was £13.50. Clattering and banging have gone.

Bit of result that then. 27 fags worth.

He will almost certainly get better advice from another branch.

I think you are barking up the wrong tree with that diagnosis :)

But you are lumbered until you get it sorted.

Not often you see leaf springs these days.

Love it. But if you really need a wooden trailing arm to get you home, my advice would be to seek out a bit of oak or other hardwood. That rough pine job doesn't look too durable...

I was in a bus - a Japanese van thing with windows - in Kenya once when the thing started to develop a permanent sideways stance. The shackles on one of the rear leaf springs had slipped and the axle had gone sideways. Everyone had to get out while the driver and his mate did their best to readjust it. Took a good couple of hours.
