Unexpected effect of VED changes - Manatee
The boss had a new car last June, which had been pre-registered on 30th May and came with a tax disc expiring 30/4/2015. I put the renewal date in my diary.

Today I asked her if she had had the VED reminder - "no" she said. So I got the V5 and set about re-taxing it.

Up came a screen saying

"Your vehicle will be taxed from 01 April 2015. Are you aware that your vehicle's current tax is not due to expire until 01 June 2015?".

It took me a while to work out what must have happened. The V5 only came to us in December; the registered keeper until 3 December was the entity that the car had initially been registered to.

Under the new rules, a change of owner (in effect what the DVLA sees) cancels the old tax and the car must be re-taxed by the new owner immediately. At least the dealer had done that! They must have put 6 months on it in December, which moved the expiry to the end of May. Hence no reminder.

And we have in effect been driving around with a cancelled tax disc since December.

Point to remember I think is to use the renewal letter or to wait until the 1st of the month after the month of expiry - using the V5 does not seem to facilitate renewal in advance.

I have just checked my cars tax status on the DVLA website. I bought it pre registered lasr September, it had been registered in June, and taxed for a year. As this was before the rule change I have a tax disc, it is in my car file. I was reading somewhere recently that many cars have been clamped by the DVLA as the owners were not aware that they were not taxed. I recently saw a DVLA van with an ANPR camera on a tripod in a police vehicle observation point on a local motorway and saw a DVLA team clamp a car in a local supermarket car park but that was some months ago.

The implication of my post was it is easy to check if your car is taxed.

And it can be clamped if it isn't.

New car last week is zero rated, but dealer was keen to point out to me that you still physically have to tax it even though no money changes hands.

Apparently a few customers hadn't bothered followed by a rude awakening
