A cousin in law turned up to take the daughter to the station in a clean, shiny, one-lady-owner, 45,000 mile Mercedes 240S or something, a long estate with a V6 engine. He paid £2,200 or so for it I think. It's the most impeccable car I've seen for ages, flawless black and I walked all round it with prying eyes.
He's a nice fellow, six foot four Canadian with a pony tail, lumberjack build. I don't grudge him his blind luck. Just a bit of envy though.
If he keeps it it won't stay flawless for long.

Often seem to be driven by astonishingly cool, erudite and may I say, usually remarkably good looking people I find.

The Mercedes was indeed that sort of car, but it was more perfect and unblemished than any of those I can remember, which often have the odd small dent, scrape or bit of tatty trim inside or out, on the sort of close inspection I tend to give cars. I heard the V6 too, sweet as a nut.
Very nice motor, but given the choice I think I'd go for a V8 and a shorter body.

You get posts all the time on the Merc forums from people who've hankered after one of the older Mercs for some time and finally "picked up" (I hate that phrase) one for a grand or so.
Next thing they've had several £500+ bills and they've got shot of it!

It isn't a very old one though. I didn't look under it but I didn't need to. It won't have a speck of rust, and probably has coatings and so on. The thing was the most impeccable jalopy I've seen for ages. Just a bit long for my taste.
There's someone here who has a very high-mileage 3 litre 5 cylinder diesel in the same bodyshell, a bit rusty here and there and with a stylish maroon breaker's yard tailgate. That too, although foxed and a five-cylinder diesel, is a very nice motor with a relaxed rumbling composure. I've driven it a few times. I think it's automatic but I'm damned if I can remember.

IIRC that 5-pot diesel is the same lump as they put in the Sprinter van. Very good engine especially in its earlier incarnations.

That's the engine I've got. Some vans/minibusses/campers use it but the vast majority are the 4cyl 2.2L

212,000 miles. And it does have auto transmission, 3 speed slushpump I think or perhaps four-speed.
My own jalopy is still OK at 130,000 miles.

Yeah yeah... of course swiss you know very well that money wouldn't have been spent if the main structure was really past it. Worth it, but only just. So far so good. Another couple of years one hopes.
