So it's a plane with no wings, not a car. I think it should need driven wheels to be called a car.

Why? Car, comes from "carriage" Its a wheeled carrier for an engine.

I had the pleasure of speaking to Andy Green a few years ago.
The rules are, as he put it, 'Must have four wheels, must be steerable, must do a measured mile and back in an hour, can run on a nuclear reactor or rubber bands.'
He said the rules would fill one page, and the rules for F1 would be the size of a telephone book!
Unfortunately, I lost the interview/transcript when my laptop was stolen, but he also talked about the 350MPH JCB diesel car. Amazing!
IIRC, it was 2 x 4cyl JCB engines mounted with the cylinders horizontally. Every second it had to pump 16litres of oil, de-aerrate, filter and cool it, and back into the system. Took 10 gallons of diesel and 300lbs of dry ice!

" a Jaguar V8 engine"
It has a Cosworth F1 engine not a Jaguar engine.
|
There's a few errors in the article but it's still interesting enough, hopefully they will be able to do it.
|
I remember they used to talk about a Cosworth engine but the Bloodhound website now says the auxiliary power unit is a 550bhp Jaguar Supercharged V8.

Why do they need to carry the APU around with them after engine start? is it a jet or a rocket?
|
As I understand it the V8 powers the fuel pump. Rockets burn a lot of fuel. It has both Jet and rocket motors.

Thanks for the update re Jaguar. I am now up to speed :-)
( Their website shows both.- They need to do some editing)

Odd crash, doubt if he'll get invited back. He was in trouble a long way back, anyone who has driven competitively would not have straightened the preceding bend as the braking will have been greatly compromised.
The run should only have been a demo and untimed - no excuse for a crash.

clearly only fast in a straight line.

Unless his stead has wings.

I am sure the PR or sponsorship budget can stand the occasional write off. They could use the engine as a spare for Bloodhounds auxiliary engine after the scenery has been cleaned off.

Y'all can even get Bloodhound Corgi models. A choice of two baseball caps. A beanie hat, and, um, a mug:

An exciting project though, I'm looking forward to following it but, I wouldn't fancy being in Andy Green's flight suit.
|
It's the same team that built Thrust 2 (Previous record holder) and Thrust SSC (current record holder) so I am sure he has a lot of trust in them.
I would like to be in his seat but my reactions probably are not good enough.
Somewhere there is a photo of the Thrust SSC track showing a point where some wheels were off the ground - and it didn't take off. Credit to the design team.
Wheels driven or not it is a car, just competes for a different record.

Can someone clear this up for a thicko - will the Bloodhound 'car' become airborne at Mach whatever it is?
|
Okay, it's finally sunk in now. Lets just hope it doesn't become airborne!
|
You want to try being the insurance underwriter for the project!
|
Hammond is looking for work, but I expect they wouldn't let him drive it !

You coming over, henry?
Couple of 4x4s already booked, and a whole lot of us will be heading that way for a week or so of watching.
|
Ian - I couldn't possibly predict what I shall be doing this far ahead, but if it gets closer to the time and you find yourself with a spare seat, I'd be grateful if you would bear me in mind, just in case I'm free.

Y'all can stay at my B&B in Springbok.
It's only 20 minutes away by Bloodhound.
I'll have beers in the fridge and glasses in the freezer.
|
FMR and Henry - I'll ask the mods to pass on my NEW email address to y'all!

Wonder if Nought will take his box brownie along there to see it. We used to live quite near to Canary Wolf, and often went there on Sunday morns for a stroll and some nosh.
