Can anyone tell me which Ford engines are fitted with cam belts and which have cam chains (and which are OHV, I suppose)?
|
What era? Current or past?
|
Engines currently in use and for the past, say, ten years.
If I buy a second-hand Ford I would like to know if it has a cam belt engine - or otherwise.
I am thinking principally of engines used in the Fiesta and Focus.
|
I am no fanboy but I thought Ford largely went back to chain-driven cams about 10 years ago ?

OK, roughly the last 10 years:
Ka to around 05/06 - ohv, around 05/06 on - cambelt.
Fiesta, Fusion petrol and diesel - cambelt.
Focus Mk I petrol and diesel - cambelt.
Focus Mk II petrol 1.6 and 2.5 ST - cambelt, 1.8 and 2.0 - camchain, diesel - cambelt.
Mondeo Mk III petrol and diesel - camchain.
Mondeo Mk IV, S-Max, Galaxy (06-on) 1.8, 2.0 and 2.3 petrol - camchain, 2.5 - cambelt, diesel - cambelt.

The Ford KA(as opposed to Fiat 500/Ford KA) were always CHAIN-changed from OHV to OHC in 2002 IIRC.
Most current Ford cambelts are 100,000 miles/ten years.

That should trigger a deluge of replies from sceptics!

I stand corrected and I also forgot the Ford/Fiat Ka.

I thought it was later that that.

I thought it was only the Focus 1.6 VVT (115ps) engine that was cambelt?
|
My MK2 Focus 2.0 tdci had a belt driving one camshaft, with a short chain drive between the camshafts.

Same as the 1.8T VAG engine in my Golf.
Volvo specify a crazy belt change interval on their application of the 2.0 PSA/Ford diesel. 144,000 miles, IIRC. You'd need to be very brave indeed.
All the Focus mk1 diesels on the fleet of the company I used to work for made the Ford recommended 100k belt changes with no premature breakages. I think a lot of lessons have been learned with timing belts.
I still don't understand why manufacturers combine belts and chains in camshaft drives.
|
Chains a mixed blessing because they need a good oil supply to keep them working well. If the car is serviced properly that is not an issue.
I know there has been plenty of pre 100k Corsas which had needed a new chain, my old one being one of them but the head gasket went before the chain caused any issues.

Nope the 100 and 115 are both belt.

Is there anywhere (web based?) where I can look this up?

This is Ford's technical site:

I did look at this site. You are supposed to be a repairer - or pretend you are a repairer - to gain access and then they want to know the reg no of the vehicle.
I am enquiring because I am considering buying a Fiesta or a Focus and would like to know if it has a chain or a belt.
