With all the energy that is saved, I suppose the addition of a thermostat controlled heating element is the way forward!

Partly why signals on the railway are the other way up (red at the bottom).

Because they don't cycle in the same way as traffic lights and the red lamp may not be on for hours the lights are laid out so there is nothing below the red light for snow build up on so the red light cannot be obscured.
