Mid-sized AWD diesels are thin on the ground over here (petrol rules).
Can't believe I am even thinking this, but Renault fit the bill with the Koleos:

Assembled in Korea in a JV with Samsung I am led to believe. Transmission and some other components are Nissan.
Renault sales over here are tiny but they are trying to make a comeback.
Car looks competitive and well-equipped. Keenly priced. Am I courting insanity...?!

Didn't know they were still making them? No idea how your currency converts but I remember seriously looking at an ex demo that had been reduced from £17 or £18k list to £11k and being slaughtered on here for considering it.
About a year later another poster mentioned in a thread that a friend had bought one at £11k and then got more than that for a trade in a year later!
I always liked them but I had 3 Scenics and really enjoyed them and this seemed a natural choice as I wanted something a bit more chunkier. At the end of the day I went for a Hyundai ix35 instead.

According to Wiki it was withdrawn from UK in 2010 due poor sales. IIRC Renault culled it's UK range substantially around that time.
Still sold in France and other markets.
|
Samsung began Samsung Motors in 1994 after failing to buy Kia. Renault bought the company in 2000, with Samsung retaining a minority stake, and the company became a Renault subsidiary. The Koleos was dropped from the UK two years before Renault culled the UK Renault range in 2012.

Yes, it was me who posted about a friend buying one. IIRC he got about £500 more in part ex than when he bought it, and the dealer kept telling him how sorry he was that he couldn't give any more for it.
Think he got on OK with it and just decided that he needed something a bit smaller. Few minor issues covered under warranty, but I think they were pretty minor

I asked a colleague who runs one in Australia. He's a petrol head and has s Clio Cup as his daily driver, this is the 'family hack' and is approaching 4 years old, not sure of the mileage but it'll be 60K+.
He clearly likes Renaults, however he said he bought it because of the Nissan X-Trail drivetrain, French design being a little less common (X-Trails are fairly ubiquitous here I would admit) and the Samsung build quality.
He'd clearly done his research - citing cust-sat reports for the Samsung factory and he's been very pleased with it having been trouble free.
They are still sold in a much more comprehensive Renault range in Aus, I can;t say they're pretty but it seems they have their fans.

FWIW HJ liked it - "Friendly looking and vary capable SUV that combines features of a good SUV with benefits of a decent MPV. Smooth revving chain cam diesel. Good ride" (4/5)

Considering there were not many sold in the UK, there are lots for sale on Autotrader and they are all dirt cheap and few have managed large mileages.

If my 'lingo were to bite the dust I might look at one. Subject to weights etc it should be a decent tow car without being too much of a compromise on general usage.
|
I'd be pondering why there are lots for sale, and why they are so cheap.
|
The word "Renault" might be a clue.

Getting some parts, especially anything RHD or even UK specific, is likely to be problematical.

35 by the check I just did - pricing it low to high you have
98,99,72,59,88,51,72,65 k miles on the first page?
|
Don't think my dog would take kindly to that split tailgate setup!
|
so three out of 35 only managed over 60k miles before being sold - The renault sweet spot.

em 6 of the ones I quoted were over 60k.......
|
Put them in mileage order next time!
So you buying a second hand Renault next then?
|
Ah that was just to see if you were paying attention!! :)
Nah, no Renault for me - prob back to Seat / VAG
Would however consider a used Clio for the daughter at some point - seems a fair swap!!

The best car I ever had, in many ways, was a Renault 18GTX, a 2 litre estate with a close ratio 5 speed gearbox, very pretty too in pale silver with brown glass and nice chromed roof siderails to distract attention from the boring Renault 18 snout and the couple of rough paint areas.
It was an unlucky car though, vandalized in Whitechapel after which I never felt the same about it again. Instead of getting the offside doors straightened and damn the expense, I got depressed and gave it to one of herself's cousins, who promptly sold it to a local toerag down here far too cheap.
I really love cars but I'm lousy at them in crucial ways.

In most ways and by most standards my Renault Fuego was an awful car, but I loved it deeply.
