Honda - Safety recall for a 12 yr. old car! - Roger.
Amazingly, we have just had a safety recall for our 02 Jazz, citing a possible air bag deployment fault.
Astonishing, I think, to receive such a recall on such an old car.
Is this usual?

The following is probably the reason why your Jazz is involved in a recall: www.theguardian.com/business/2014/jun/23/honda-recalls-2m-cars-airbag-scare

Age of vehicle is not relevant.

I've had a recall for my 11-year-old Nissan, presumably for the same air-bag problem.

Do I want them dismantling my (currently rattle free) dashboard to correct a problem that hasn't arisen in that time and in all probability I won't encounter in my lifetime?

What proportion of cars are scrapped with the air-bags intact?

It would seem the problem's one of the passenger air-bag, possibly, ejecting small pieces of debris if it's activated.

I rarely sit that side of the car.

I've decided to ignore it.

Hmm. And who normally sits there??? Does she read this forum?

SWMBO and no!

I've explained the reasons why and she agrees with me.

"Darling, you might lose an eye if the airbag goes off. They could fix the airbag for free but I'm afraid it might make the dashboard rattle."

How much did you explain?

Note from Auristo's Guardian link: how can the paper that publishes Steve Bell also give page space to the truly terrible cartoonist Kipper Williams?

In 2006 (I think...) I bought a 1988 BMW 3-Series touring. That had an outstanding recall for a faulty coolant tank cap, which was cheerfully replaced FOC by Chandlers in Worthing in 2007 - almost 20 years after the car was built!!

Not a recall or very motory but I bought my first Swiss Army Knife in 1981. In 2004 the leaf spring working the scissors broke. The camping shop down the road sent the knife off to Victorinox UK, who sent it back fixed, cleaned and sharpened, all FOC.

As I actually read the instruction book, I am not supposed to attatch anything to the "ignition" key. This is because the car has drivers knee airbags which could fire any attachments into the drivers reproductive equipment.

Cynical me thinks that the airbag is an attempt to stop the steering column mounts kneecapping the driver in the event of a heavy impact.

The joys of a small car. :)

Not even a key fob, ON? Surely that makes it more likely the key will be lost. Replacement keys must be a good earners for Toyota.

The actual words are "Do not attach any heavy, sharp, or hard objects such as keys and accessories to the key". I will treat it as a legal get out of jail instruction. I only have a small door key on the car key and Mrs ON is past reproduction age. As long as the equipment is still useable we will be content. ;>)

Done & dusted plus another much earlier recall for a window switch. No problems!
