Transporting a car - bathtub tom
I'm looking to buy a nearly new car and put it in my garage until I flog my present one.

Any suggestions as to how I find someone to transport it the forty miles, or perhaps someone with trade plates who could do the job for me.

Will the dealer not deliver it for you? I've had cars delivered from dealers a hundred miles away before now. Usually some nice old bloke with a clipboard. Might be Phil.

"some nice old bloke with a clipboard"
That's me!! ;-)
(Except we now have digital phoney things rather than a clipboard.)

And most of our drivers - all over 45 (some a lot over 45!) And all keen to eke out the highest mpg possible rather than thrashing your nice new car!

What's stopping you from doing it yourself bt? I seem to remember that trade plates can be used temporarily. I know I've driven a car with one of the two sorts of trade plates on it, but I can't remember what car or when. Of course it might have been illegal, but I don't think it was, or not very anyway.

IIRC trade plates can only be used by the person or company to whom they are issued, on pain of forfeit if caught.

Tom, a quick scan of e-bay (try classic cars section) might give some clues.

Bathtub,
The company I work for transports cars from all over the country to all over the country either driven, on a transporter or in a covered trailer.
I think the going rate is £55 (+VAT) for 50 miles or under ( a bit higher if within the M25).
It's about double that ( I think) if on a transporter).
We can do virtually next day delivery if required.
Rather than advertise my lot on here, if you want further details you could PM me via the mods.
Or, of course, Google "car delivery"
eg
tinyurl.com/lescryj
(My company is on that page!)
or, possibly even better ask the dealer who they use for individual car deliveries - many dealers also have their own drivers who deliver or collect cars.

Thanks PhilW (I couldn't recall your new monicker). Motorpoint said they couldn't help - perhaps an opportunity for your lot?

I'll use the link.

I wonder if it's PhilW's company going to deliver my new Audi next week on a transporter. It's over 100 miles from Milton Keynes to me so it won't be driven.

All of the Vw/Audi/Skoda hire cars now seem to have Gx plates (Kent?) not Milton Keynes, plates for some reason!

I can never understand why BMW based in Bracknell register their cars in Yorkshire.

They arrive at Immingham and the dispersal depot is in Thorne, Nr Doncaster, S Yorks ??

It's all a mystery - to me anyway.
I once delivered a brand new BMW from Leics to Belfast. Arranged where to meet the customer at about 7am near the docks. He suggested the Asda car park. When I got there the main BMW dealer for N Ireland was next door. Car had N Ireland plates on.
With regard to Thorne; the only cars I have picked up there are still in transporter mode with bits of plastic/polystyrene protecting vulnerable bits - don't think they register cars there - the dealers they go to do that I think.
I've also picked up lots of cars from a PDI centre in Staffs and they have Staffs plates but the dealer that sold them is in Surrey and the customer thinks they are being delivered from Surrey. I think that much of this is to do with the lease companies who only deal with dealers who have a "corporate" division that deals exclusively with lease companies or maybe because many dealerships are part of a large group (Sytner, Inchcape?) who register cars via their head office no matter which branch actually supplies the car?
No doubt someone will enlighten me.

All BMW press and 'management' cars are registered in Thorne, approx 15k cars a year I think (including MINI). I think most Alphabet (BMW owned lease co) cars are have Rx registrations as they're based in Hook

As Fullchat says, BMWs import centre is in Thorne, near Doncaster. All cars pass through it, and their own-use cars are now registered there. Others are distributed to the dealer network. But BMW also own Alphabet leasing, based in Hampshire, and I think their cars atill have Rx registrations. It was only in 2005 that BMW switched to registering cars in Yorkshire - prior to that all their cars had Reading registrations.

"It's over 100 miles from Milton Keynes to me so it won't be driven."

Not sure about that. I've delivered brand new cars all over the country often much more than 100 miles (took one recently from London to Keith up by Aberdeen). Took an MB up to Glasgow from MK last week and a few weeks ago another MB from Exeter to E Kilbride!
Not sure how it is decided - does customer, dealership or lease company decide?
All I know is that I saw an invoice recently which specified the delivery charge from the dealership - £400 yet our company charged about £100!
Don't think we do much business out of Audi MK, rtj - not sure I've been there - MB, BMW, Lexus, Toyota, yes, but not Audi MK.
So you might get your new car delivered clean, undamaged and on time!!!

I've had new cars with as few as 3 miles on the clock, and as many as 600.

Z,
Who decides whether it is driven or transported?

In my case it was the leasing company.. Whatever cost less.

Thanks, I thought that might be the case.

For my car I think the lease company says up to 100 miles and is driven. Over 100 and it is transported. Probably would bring two cars anyway.

Our company has a call with Audi UK which the lease company manages. All Audi's ordered direct and come from Audi's allocation of cars. Hence my order being fulfilled quicker. I had originally been told six months. Cars are then allocated via the one MK dealer. Audi HQ is in Milton Keynes isn't it?
