 Insurance renewal - BobbyG
Both our cars are insured with Directline.
renewal for mine was £234.26 and the missus £505.62

Did quotes online with Directline and if you ticked the box saying you were already named on a policy (which we are) then the quotes were £196.10 & £380.54.

Phoned them up and they were able to pull these quotes up straightaway, checked that all details were correct in relation to the levels of cover etc and are honouring the online quotes.

Normally I would be hacked off that they were extracting the urine out of me with the renewal but at this moment I am quite chuffed that I have just saved £163 with a phone call and some online quotes!

(I didn't think £380.54 was too bad for a 1.25 Fiesta with wife, me and my 20 year old daughter on it (she has been driving 2 years).

They were asking £163 more in their renewal and found they could cut it 2nd time around.

They were shafting you and you are thinking of renewing with them.

I'd go on comparison sites and walk even if it costs a few ££s more.

The ploy of giving high renewals and assuming people will pay should not be rewarded
by people taaking quote 2... IMHO.

Directline have my household insurance.

Renewal quote is for £ lots
Do on-line quote with them, £ quite a bit less
Ring up and moan. They almost equal the online price, but you get slightly better cover from a renewal as there is 10 days waiting on some benfits.

So one is ok in the end, but why they couldn't offer the better price first... Silly question of course, answer is to make more money.

Yep, I'd have walked on principle.

Hate it when you call to stop an auto renewal and the price can suddenly drop. Given the cost of acquiring a new customer I guess the ones who just pay the renewal price must outweigh the ones who shop around

I only have one principle. All things being equal take the cheapest offer. Companies aren't charities: they aren't obliged to give you the cheapest price. It's a market where deals can be done. That's a good thing. Take advantage of it.

But Direct Line are brokers, not an insurance company? It's surely the job of a broker to negotiate the best price for you, not get a good deal and then pocket half the profits themselves.

No, they are an Insurer not a broker. UK Insurance underwrite most of their business. They are under no obligation to give you the cheapest quote or the best deal.

LV= have usually been cheaper with the renewal than doing a new quote. They weren't this year though - £40 dearer. Not a huge amount, but that's 20%.
