Work has started to replace the central barrier on the M1 between junctions 16 and 19. Presumably this is the concrete type designed to stop cross carriageway incursions as installed between Chesterfield and Sheffield. Currently, they're marking out the temporary lanes and patching sections of the hard shoulder.
Work will apparently take a year and means a 50mph speed limit from 16 running into that already in place for the J19 improvement. Specs cameras installed but plated as not in use.
It's perhaps unsurprising but effect yesterday, in morning rush traffic, seemed to improve flow. Less of the harsh braking/bunching stuff common on that section, particularly on the gradients round Watford Gap.

Been up M1 again a couple of times since OP.
By last Thursday new lanes had been painted and hard shoulder running (with emergency phones out of service) implemented halfway to J19. Today the temporary barriers protecting the work site arre partly in place with removal of old barrier in progress northwards from J16.
Came back on A5 via J21 and Gibbet Junction. Need to retrain my 'autopilot habit of going straight to J16 for any excursion norrh on M1/M6 and use A5 in that direction too.
