Buying a car in Republic of Ireland - BobbyG
My b-I-l's secondment to Arizona is finished so him and my sister are now back in Ireland and looking to buy a car each.

Before they went over, she had a Galaxy as kids were still at school etc and he had a diesel Mondeo for commuting to and from work.

She has asked me for advice on cars, he is thinking of an Octavia for commuting and she is looking for a small MPV and has suggested a B Max.

I advised them of all the changes in the last few years, economical petrols with turbos, DPFs for diesels , more autos than before (they are obviously been driving autos in USA).

So then I look at the ford.ie website - the B Max comes in two trims and one engine, a 1.5 diesel. The ford.uk website has 4 versions and 6 engines to choose from!

Looking on the Irish autotrader website there seems to be much less choice and variety than we have here.

Why the difference? They drive on the right the same as us, they have people with different preferences, autos etc the same as us, so why is the car choice just not there in Eire?

Ah that accounts for quite a lot!

Pedant Corner

Eire (with the accent over the capital e) is the Irish language word for the island of Ireland and The Republic of Ireland.

If you are using English, then it should be Ireland or The Republic of Ireland.

It's a lot smaller market - simple as that. The smaller brands just wouldn't get enough salea to justify a dealer network.

Quite a different market to the UK - with Toyota and VW vying for 1st and 2nd place and Ford in 3rd. The best selling car in Ireland in May 2014 was the Corolla - the Turkish-built saloon version of the Auris.
Could look at the Toyota Verso S with CVT, which is a similar size to the Romanian-built B-Max.
