Despite how close the spectators get to the cars Rallying is generally pretty safe as motorsport goes. But today the inevitable happened -

Nasty indeed.
However;
"[witness] said that about 20 minutes before the cars set off officials warned a group of about a dozen spectators to move because they were in an “unsafe place”".
So, shocking, but perhaps not a surprise?

Indeed. Even watching rallying on TV - something I don't often do - one sees spectators standing in absolutely insane places, asking for it. I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.

Spectators in the UK are generally well behaved, although they do tend to exhibit a lack of understanding of the physics involved.

I spectated on the RAC rally throughout the Group B years and I never saw anything remotely as bad.
We'll have to wait for the informed sources as to what really happened here.
