Looks from the photos very much like the biggest force was taken by the back of the car which is probably why the driver survived, presumably being supported by the seat at the moment of impact. The passenger compartment looks fairly intact.

That article reminded me of many happy trips to spectate on the Manx Rally years ago. Think it was sponsored by Rothmans in those days. My hero at the time, a bloke called Vatanan, barrel rolled his Escort (uncompetitive so he was giving it his all) a few hundred yards up the road from where we were standing.
Pretty sure he walked away with just a sore neck.
For a few years in my yoof I was mad keen on rallying and even participated (timidly) in my RS 2000 with a local motor club.
