The kink on the bodywork at the rear quarter is aped on the V40.

Sad? No not really. Odd, definitely. Most odd.

Sad? no not sad. I'd put it down to brain damage after your crash.
|
I must admit I owned a Maxi for a number of years. Quite a good car really, handled like the Mini's bigger brother, and a bit like driving an armchair.
Made a good RAC rally follow vehicle, although 1000 miles, 9 stages and less than 8 hours sleep in total is a bit silly and not even possible these days with office hour rallys.
I very much doubt though it makes any sense as an old vehicle, and I'd be surprised if that one had secure and non-rusted jacking points.
|
I'm very wary of so called full restoration jobs as owners of such cars often panic if anyone goes near the original jacking points to lift the car.
|
>> Is it too sad that I'd really like to have it?
Yes. But liking cars is a bit sad, many would say.
Maxi was a bit floppy. Austin 1800 was much better, although bigger.
|
I find it difficult to disassociate a car with my emotional state at the time that I owned the car.
And when I owned that Maxi I was having a good time. A very good time indeed.
True, the left hand windscreen wiper did have a habit of flying off, and I was so poor I used to stop and pick it up; including one time around 1:00am at Heston Services on the M4, but I was having a great time with life.
|
>> I find it difficult to disassociate a car with my emotional state at the time that I owned the car.
Oh good God. Cans of worms, wall to wall and beyond.
Hell's bells...
|
Austin Maxis always make me think of 1970s soft porn mags. A friend's dad had a Maxi and we discovered that he hid his Norman Vaughn in the garage where he also kept his Maxi. Funny how things things leave a lasting impression.
|
>>1970s soft porn mags.
I had a lovely looking girlfriend called Carol - I was besotted.
Her Father was a peculiar man, very short and really napoleon-ish with a massive chip on his shoulder. He kept a bunch of 70s Porn (dodgy wigs, wide collars, lots of loud breathing) on film in his shed along with a projector. Once watched some of it with the Girlfriends brother and encountered a video of said short Father with fat next door neighbour.
To this day I can't help but feel that garden sheds are a bit dodgy.

Whilst in complete contrast my Grandfather had 2 Maxis in a row when I was younger so they left a completely different impression on me!! They lived in Oxfordshire at the time, and the first one had a registration that began GRD - for GRanDad. :-) Harvest Gold I think it was.
Followed by a Maxi 2 in brown. And then a Montego estate in beige. Then a Rover 216 in white, which inexplicably was a GTi I think... Always best to buy British...so a great disappointment when Rover went pop... ;-)
|
As a gangly spotty and awkward 17 year old I was given a lift to church in one of these by a young lady of whom I was incredibly shy.....

That Superdream is the type of bike I'd happily own now, being as my need for speed days have been kicked into touch by an ageing body that doesn't take kindly to bouncing on tarmac. That particular model had a major design flaw, however. The fuel tap was sited above the lower level on the tank which meant water collected in the bottom and they rusted through.

Idly mooching through this morning I came across this. Not that the car is worth a thing or even very interesting, but I was intrigued by the fan belt / fan / radiator arrangement.
Have a look, its in one of the photos - about the 6th, I think.

Talk about contradictions in a listing...
"
THE CAR IS BEEN RE-LISTED DUE TO UNFORSEEN CIRCUMSTANCES
VERY RARE LOW MILEAGE AND DRY STORED FOR THE LAST 261/2 YEARS JUST CAME OUT OF THE GARAGE YESTERDAY
THE CAR IS ORIGINAL BUT I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY EXPERTS ON THESE CARS THAT IT HAS A WARTBERG 1000CC 3 CYLINDER TWO STROKE ENGINE AND MINI RADIATOR
APPARENTLY THIS IS NOT UNUSUAL ON THIS CAR BUT WAS DONE FOR PERFORMANCE REASONS
|
I rather liked that it had been stored in a barn for 26 years but "all tyres look ok".
|
I suppose you can't watch this 'down there' Marko but:
www.channel5.com/shows/classic-car-rescue/episodes/episode-1-632
Porsche 928.
|
Well, if I jump through a few hoops I can, but if this is the show I think I found it unwatcheable because of the contrived antics of Bernie Fineman. He just came across as a total pfd that would get slapped a lot if he behaved like that in real life.

And I never liked that similar Mike Brewer show because it was so unrealistic.
Which is a pity, since I'd like that type of show if they would do it properly.
Bring back the vet, that's what I say.
|
>>Which is a pity, since I'd like that type of show if they would do it properly.
It's aimed at numbskulls who know nuffink about cars IMO, I watch it purely out of interest :)
Nice to see the ole 928 though, not one of my faves really but watching the prog I think I could learn to live with one.
- if I had lud's sort of money.
|
OMG I thought a red leather seated Alfa was nice in an acquired sort of way... but red everything...
|
Funny that - I was thinking that all-red interior looked a bit stressful.
928 is rapid, thirsty, comfortable and expensive to run. Also a tiny bit well, boring... it was sold as a 'businessman's express' which I find offputting verging on repellent.
|
Yuk! - I'll stick with the scooby doo thanks ;)

Same arrangement as my Jowett. The radiator is above the engine at the rear of the engine bay and the fan is on the end of a shaft, about a foot long, driven by a pulley at the front.

That's not mine, by the way. My front bumper is much, much shinier !
|
Very cool car there, Mr. Ontaltwin.
|
The sad thing is that cars are inevitably all converging on the same "perfect" answer. So their differences are becoming less and less obvious.
When I was young it was about a 30 minute walk to where we caught the school bus from, and with my mother's enthusiasm for punctuality she dispatched us with considerable time to spare.
My friend Peter (who had an equally enthusiastic parent) and I used to while away the 15 minutes and amuse ourselves at the bus stop identifying cars from headlamps and sound as they came toward us - I have to assume that would be a pointless and disappointing game these days since they all look the same.
Clearly the "perfect answer" does not include character or individuality.
And the Marina, awful though it may have been, had character. As did the Maxi, the Cortina, the Herald, the Rover P6, the Viva etc etc.
These days I would happily swap some effectiveness for some character.
The Chevy Custom 10 Deluxe Pickup is now running and I have high hopes of using it as transport soon. (the one I found at the same time as the MG1300 and the bus). At least, the engine is running. For the 50 metres its actually traveled it was tied to my Landcruiser.

Alfa Romeo and Citroen do try to inject a bit of character into their cars, but the rest are much of a muchness really i.e. BORING.
|
>>I have to assume that would be a
>> pointless and disappointing game these days since they all look the same.
While that may have been becoming the case, I think that the recent innovations in lighting have made cars look very different. Take a sporty Citroen DS3 coming at you, when I first saw that, it was a WTF! moment.
>> And the Marina, awful though it may have been, had character.
I bet Fred West had character but you wouldn't want to be in his company.

Interesting special body. I had a '48 factory van once. Swapped it for a '53 CD Type Bradford estate, only one left in the UK. Only a dozen or so made.

I know it was a rubbish car, I had one briefly, and it was really rubbish. I probably only have fond memories of it because it was succeeded by what was actually the worst car in its day, an Allegro. Baby Puke yellow, at that.

Lucky you, I had two of the damn things.
|
Its not so much the looks as the sound they make. Aside from sporty Mercs, thumping Suburus etc, most cars sound the same these days. Usually a feint diesel rattle overlaid on tyre noise. Bring back proper car sounds, I say.
|
My 325 didn't ! The V40 is smoother than the BMW......but go into kickdown on an A road to, let's say, overtake a mimser and it actually cackles and crackles like a witch on acid....intoxicating ....

I need to get back to the UK, I'd love to have this as a hobby...

Haven't seen one of those for years, then saw a pristine bright red one in use as a catering van outside Great Shelford village hall only last week!
|
That's right on my doorstep!
|
>> That's right on my doorstep!
That's a worry then. Bloke prob'ly keeps his ferrets or pigeons in it.
;-)
|
And indeed pretty near mine.
|
That's a Fourgon conclusion. :-)
|
Don't go there. House behind us has had a ruudy pidgeon loft on the boundary fence about 25M away. Whilst the gentle sound of pigeons cooing can be relaxing, not in the early hours of the morning it aint. Rats living underneath.
His next door neighbour keeps goats and chickens but the cockerel was the last straw and positive action was needed.
You know when you want to get a recording then push the speakers right up to their bedroom window at 4 in a morning just to give them a taste.
|
Get a cat FC. Soon decimate them flying rats - and the crawling ones too with any luck.
|
I'd call the Police if I were you Fc, like the Ferret did ;)
|
>> I'd love to have this as a hobby...<<
I'll find you one if you like (commission-free to you sir...`). They're still all over the place here, from excellent condition to rusting (slowly) in gardens and hedges.
|
Mike,
That's very kind, and tempting.
I'm not quite sure when I shall be back in the UK, but if I may I'll bear your offer in mind and contact you when I am?
I'd certainly love to have one.
|
Sure! I'll be in the UK for two weeks to the end of May, then maybe in July, otherwise looking for something to take my mind off grasscutting.
|
Lovely car, really nasty paint job.
|
Ad's grammar/spelling matches the paint job :)
|
Why? They wanted to make the outside match the cream leather & wood inside?
Probably ruined the ride with those wheels too.
|
22". Bigger than most tellies not so long ago.
|
I think, although I don't remember for sure, that mine had 19".
It was the one thing I didn't like about the car. Living on rough, country roads it used to get soooo many punctures. However, the ride was fine.
|
Watch it. It's Friday. I can order deliveries from The Maramaris online now. Forgot to take pictures of the several souvlakis and gyros I had in Athens this week. Rats.
|
Amazingly my Lancia Beta HPE had 175x14!!
Does anything have 14s on these days?
|
That looks very much like asking for it.
14s? Citroen C1s and the like probably have 13s I'd guess. The (2.0 litre) Volvo 360 I sold last year had 13s.
|
My old Kia had 12s.
Try getting tyres for that!
|
My vintage car has 19" wheels, but the tyres are 4.00x19"s, ie cross-ply and 100% sidewall to tread ratio.
Standard sidewall to tread ratio for radials is 82% - so arguably, any car on radials has low profile tyres. Sort of pub quiz type knowledge.

Yep, I would go for that plus a years ticket if it makes £550.
Always wanted a DS but cant ever see it happening
|
I could never feel comfortable in a car with black upholstery. It makes the interior gloomy and depressing.
|
Why is everything a barn find now? Don't folk keep cars anywhere else?
|
I had two of these, although not as high spec as this one. Marvellous cars, loved them both and didn't have any bother with either.

I had a 131 in between a Lancia Beta saloon and a 2.0 HPE.
I didn't like it much, although as mine was an older one it had the rather awful pushrod engine. I preferred the Lancias, anyway.
Funnily enough it came to a sticky end against the NSL sign as you leave your manor. There's a ditch just behind it, or at least there was, and it resided there for a week or two until the authorities gave up hope of finding out who owned it and took it away.
|
Blimey. Did it have no numberplates?
|
More casual days, Young Al, more casual days.
|
I expect I was a teenager/student in the days you speak of, Old NF. Mid-late 80s?
Still surprised the Old Bill couldn't be harrised to look up a numberplate and check it out, even then.
|
I think it was 81, and looking up the number plate might not have been the most productive use of their time.
|
Seriously though, that 131 of Alanović's is a real minter. Not a trace of the alleged Fiat tendency to rust around the wheelarches and bonnet leading edge.
Buff up lovely that will guv. A true classic.
|
Do you know? I think I might just go for it!

|
What a lousy paint job!
:-/
|
Looks a nice straight motor to me. The paint job isn't bad either. Rust look! Of course you'd have to drive it, look at the state of the fluids and so on to know for sure how straight it was.
|
I am sure it is a straight motor. The description comes over as thoughtful and honest to me.
|
Strange paint job. Looks as if seagulls have used it for target practise. They've been pretty accurate from the side.
|
Strange gulls down your way, JB. Or is it just unusually windy there?

It will fail to rise to that price. It will resurface again later.

Nice BT, very nice indeed.
|
Yes.
But the fast one, and fragile one, was the rarer and rarer RS1800. Rarer and rarer and rarer.
The cooking one was almost as fast, much more likely to run when required and obviously the thing to have. Getting a bit dear looks like.
I bet there are a few forged ones, and a few other really good bitza specials. It was a golden age for Ford, couldn't make a crap model.
Still remember the eager bellow of the cousin-in-law's white Mexico down a short A29 incline, up to 100 and back no problemo. And to think the Mexico was the off-the-peg punter's version! Nice motor it is. I wonder how many good ones there are now.
|
Very nicely presented. I so want one !
