Ok, I've given up on the tarmac fairies ever completeing the plae for us to how our cars so I,ve driven my old ones off to photobucket. This is my Peugeot 104 owned from 82 to 86 and known to me and my friends as the Bean Can.
s809.photobucket.com/user/bromptonaut/library/Bean%20Can
What were the cars of your formative years?
|
Ah, my first car was a Talbot Samba!!! LS model which I think meant it got headrests and rear wash wipe!
|
The Bean Can was pretty much same car as the Samba. had headrests but no wash/wipe. The ZS had headrests but no rear wash/wipe. On this particular example the words 'Don't Follow me Follow Spurs' appeared whenever the rear window steamed up.
Bought it in Stanmore where THFC had strong support.
|
My sister had a yellow Samba when she lived in Edinburgh and she eventually sold it. About a year later she moved to Porthcawl and her old Samba was in the next door's driveway!
|
Here are most of my cars, missing photos of
Black Citroen ZX Estate P307CMO
White Peugeot 309 E230VHS

Nice Capri your neighbour had there, Brompt. Bet you were envious.

>>Nice Capri your neighbour had there, Brompt. Bet you were envious.
It belonged to my housemate John and was, IIRC permanently off the road and anyway only a 1.6. My Pug was a 104ZS, an early warm hatch, getting 66BHP out of 1124cc, so had a better power/weight ratio, nearer that of a 2.0 Capri. No jealousy at all!!
John also owned the Transit Luton behind my car. He was a Jewish guy and in the rag trade - the van was his shop.
The lady at number 33, outside which my car is parked, was a widow and had been there more or less since the place was built. She found living next door to a multi-occupied house a bit of a trial. There were occasional exchanges over parking etc.

Ours was the house with the silver MPV in the drive. Judging by state of place it might still be be let out as bedsits.

I hope this is of interest - ignore if not! I'll show how nerdy I am by remembering the registration numbers....
1955 Austin A50 - bought in 1968 OCE 340
1966 MG 1100 - my father gave me his car for my 21st birthday in 1969 LPA 566D
1971 MG 1300 - new from this one onwards - I've been lucky AOT 373J
1973 Austin Maxi PPE 127L
1975 Austin Maxi KPD 191P
1978 Chrysler Horizon DLH 767T (a mistake - should have had a Golf)
1980 Renault 20TS EAN 768V

1988 Renault Espace TXE F923 NMO
1994 Renault Safrane 2.2 L582 YWP
1998 Renault Laguna V6 R549 YWE
2001 VW Golf 1.9 TDI estate Y289 JYC
2004 Audi A4 2.5 TDI Avant RO 04 VTC
2006 Mercedes B200 CDI RO 06 OCM
2007 VW Golf 2.0 TDI estate RN 07 LDD (I hated the B-class)
2009 Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDI vRS estate OV 09 CFO
2011 Skoda Octavia 2.0 TSI vRS estate OY 11 NXE
2013 Skoda Octavia 2.0 TSI vRS estate (current)
Best loved - my first car, the A50, and the Audi, closely followed by the current Octavia. The Renaults were company cars - all reliable but depreciated savagely, and in 2001 I changed to a job with more salary but no car.
SWMBO has had about 15 cars since we were married in 1974, starting with a 1965 Mini Traveller, currently with the latest of five MINIs. In contrast we've lived in, but extended, the same house for nearly 40 years. At last we're intending to move this year, on retirement.

No, not really. Do you? My email address is in my profile.
I have very fond memories of the early days of Capital Radio - strangely, quite a lot of the jingles and adverts have stuck in my mind.
|
Worthwhile use of the next 10 minutes of your life if you remember Capital from the 70s.

I went for a meeting with my boss a few weeks ago. He gave me a couple of freebie polo shirts - promoting a product that was superceded in 2008 :-(

The slogan 'Capital Radio 194' died a death in eighties when MW/MF frequencies were re-jigged based on 9kh channel separation and frequency/khz rather than wavelength/metres became the accepted designator.
|
My brother had a lime green 104ZL (smaller engine than ZS) and he even had a Capital Radio sun strip on it like yours, Brompt.
|
Peugeot 104 was a terrific little car, all models. One look at the engine made you smile contentedly.
|
A few years ago I had a blat around local back roads in a 104 ZS belonging to an elderly friend - she was a bit afraid of it.
It took a week to wipe the grin off my face. SWMBO was following in our Accord coupe and couldn't keep up!
|
My uncle had a red ZS, which he loved. I had an early saloon (4-door, no hatch) and only 954cc. Great little cars, though, and very fond memories!

Mountain passes were good proving ground for leaving others behind, Honister or Llanberis for example. Engine ran like a sewing machine and was a chain cam job. Alloy plus wet liner construction meant that any overheating was going to be costly though. Add in a rad fan who's earth was exposed to corrosion and ££££.
IIRC quite a bit of the 104 carried forward into the 205. Had one of those as well, a 1.7 diesel. It too could be chucked about in lanes. A good pace required lots of gear changing to keep the motor in the 2-3k max torque band but it couldn't half progress on the back route from here to Banbury.

Unless you had to work on it of course......
|
Mrs A had a 104SL from 1978-83, only disposed of with arrival of third offspring. As you say Bromptonaut they were entertaining little cars and the five door version pretty practical. It was bought new so there was considerable thought given to colour and eventually she settled on the lime/yellow rather than the more restrained orange. Starting in damp weather and servicing...... now that can still bring on nightmares.
For the record the other alfalfa cars were, in order of ownership;
Triumph Herald 1965
MG TC 1947
Fiat 500 1964
Triumph Spitfire 1971
Renault 4 1971
Fiat 128 1972
Fiat128 Coupe 1973
Saab 99 Combi 1975
Peugeot 104SL 1978
Saab 900 1979
Alfasud 1982
Golf Diesel 1984
Peugeot 305 estate 1983
Peugeot 505 estate 1986
Isuzu Trooper 1991
Golf Diesel 1994
Saab 900 1996
Audi A4 estate 1997
Alfa 147 2001
Forester 2002
Golf Diesel 2005
Forester 2006
Forester 2012
Sorry it's a long list but it includes Mrs A's cars as well and often use and ownership swapped. The worst were the 305 estate and the 1996 Saab. The Golfs and Foresters have been models of reliability but the cars I would really want again would be the 1975 Saab, the Fiat 128 coupe and of course the Alfasud.

I would like to have seen the drive operational too... I have images of around 50 of our cars inc some family ones like the first car I travelled in as a baby and the first decent car I drove after passing my test.
Enjoyed Bobby's bucket slide show... I've got an account so may do that.

I don't think I have photos of any of my old motors (unless they got into shot on a photo taken of something else) but here they are:
1999 Fiat Punto 1.2 5 door (a coldly logical trade off between purchase price, cost to insure and practicality. Got this one because that's what the local FIAT garage had in my price range the day I went looking!)
2001 BMW 318i auto saloon (bought from FiL when offered it for the same trade in price he'd get for it)
2007 Subaru Legacy 2.0 auto (bought following a 48 hour loan and keen deal, sight unseen, on the BMW after an afternoon's tyre kicking just because I really really liked it)
Each replaced its predecessor, for no better reason than a good deal appeared at the right time. I can't see the Legacy going until it dies or big lazy petrols are taxed off the road.
In the same time, SWMBO has owned (so we've driven interchangably and I've maintained):
1992 Ford Fiesta 1.0
1994 Opel Vectra 1.6 GL saloon (MiL's car, bought for the sale price of the Fiesta)
2001 Renault Scenic 1.4 (Opel traded in due to leaking bulkhead and adopting two greyhounds)
2003 Renault Scenic 1.4 (2001 Scenic written off; nearly bought a Forester but logic said another Scenic would be cheaper to run)
1999 Subaru Forester 2.0 (non-turbo) (2nd Scenic t-boned in sudden ice and snow 6 months later, and written off. Saw this as a trade sale in local dealership the afternoon after the Scenic was crashed into and bought it on the spot.)
2003 Fiat Panda 1.2 (Traded in Forester when presnted with €2200 list of work to do and an insurance quote for an under 25 Au Pair.)
A Berlingo/Maxi Caddy/Doblo is on the cards to replace the Panda when it coughs. We've both been fond of both previous Fiats, so a Doblo is the front runner.

Can you define the slideshow order with pbucket?
One of our BXs was a TZD estate in that dark met green. I always though it an excellent colour.
|
>> Can you define the slideshow order with pbucket?
Took a bit of faffing but yes. Not 100% sure how I did it but I think moving the organise switch to On allowed me to drag/drop.
>> One of our BXs was a TZD estate in that dark met green. I always
>> though it an excellent colour.
Think ours was a TGD.
Bought in 1993 when first child came along as lifting heavy push chair out of a proper boot was doing both our backs in. In estate it could be stowed fore/aft and rolled in/out. It was then two years old and had previously been a fleet car with NHBRC.
Ran it until 2005, but as second car from Oct 2000 when we got the Xantia. Estimate for 05 MoT was £700 (including new steering rack) with message that rear suspension arm bearings were near limit and tin worm was finally taking hold. Sent it to scrappy and bought the Berlingo.
|
There was no doubt a Xantia seemed more of a grown up car after the BX but we were very keen on the two TZD estates we owned. The green one did its head gasket big time after we'd taken a chance running it with coolant loss issues for a few more miles than it could manage. Mileage was around 249,600 at that point so it had done OK.
|
"In estate it (pushchair) could be stowed fore/aft and rolled in/out."
Besides being easier to lift loads in and out, the other advantage of a flat load sill is they make good picnic tables with shelter from the weather under the rear hatch. Better again with a 12V socket in the bootspace for the coolbox :-)

From an R Type Bentley SS saloon to a Citroen Dyane. Is this the greatest motoring leap of all time, in either direction? Can't envisage a much greater dichotomy. Makes my downgrade from a Mondeo estate to a SEAT Ibiza seem inconsequential.
|
The Dyane was my only ever brand-new car and I hammered it mercilessly, shortening its useful life. But even driven like that it went four times as far as the R Type on a gallon, in town anyway.
I didn't see it as a downgrade or downsizing, even if it was.

Running costs of the first probably lead to the second ;)

All numbers quoted from memory. The Mk1 Escort is currently somewhere on SORN.....it was an utter bag of nails when I'd finished with it. Actually, it was an utter bag of nails when I bought it.

Got a bit carried away there with my VWs. The Galaxy was, natch, a Ford Galaxy.

Small list as I keep cars for a long time.
Morris Marina Coupe
Austin Maxi
Morgan 4/4 (owned for 28 years)
Ford XR3i (very early one, handled like a go-cart)
Rover 214
Vauxhall Frontera Sport (bought new and not kept for long - very badly built)
Landrover Discovery
Morgan Super Sports Aero
Landrover Defender 90
Landrover Defender 110
I liked driving the Escort, but sold it when I got fed up with the attitudes of others. Never let out etc, whereas the Morgan three wheeler I got away with making my own lane in a stationary north circular!

If you see this, Commerdriver, which of the last two do you prefer - 3-series or Golf?

They both have their strong points the Golf is slightly quicker, the BMW is better on a long motorway run, main reason for changing to the Golf was downsizing a little & making a choice of a potential retirement car.
I like both cars, wife & daughter both prefer the Golf to drive, younger son likes the Golf but prefers the BMW to drive, fair enough since he bought it from the leasing company. Oldest son still reckons the second Saab was more pleasant to drive then either of them.
I must admit if Saab had stayed in business I would still have a Saab.

Why would them being out of business stop you? I'm still considering throwing money at my lovely SAAB to keep it going.

All my cars, as I said above, have been company cars, they just were not on the list by 2010.
|
Yes, but you already have one. Saab and I parted in 2002 when I had to choose a new company car and Saab was no longer on the list - hence the Volvo. I considered moving to a 9-5 2.3t estate in 2005 but requirements changed and it wouldn't have worked out; in fact the S60 D5 turned out to be perfect for the long commute I took on.
But the 9-5 is a near-20yo design, and I wouldn't buy into that now - or still less into the 9-3 from the fully-GM period. If I go Saab again it will have to be a 900 Ruby as a practical toy.
