Hi All,
Have a 53 Jazz thats needs major service and been quoted around the £500 mark for it. Now in my younger days I handled almost any job on a car and can more than easily do a major on my Jazz ( mind the comfort of a heated garage with full Audio entertainment, soft furnishing on floor and surgical gloves are a pre-req these days ) and was wondering, as the car is now 7 yr old, is there any valuein a dealer stamped service history at that age ?
Thanks

No. A service history of some kind (local garage or receipts for home servicing) but not a dealer history.

i got a jazz too a 2008 model, it depends on whether you are keeping the car longer, as the higher mileage jazz tend to have problems with the gearbox, you need the goodwill of the dealer if your jazz develops a fault, if it is serviced by the dealer then that will help in getting some assistance, if you got quoted over £500 for servicing it better to play against other dealers and see whether you get a quote lower.
That quote probably includes tappet adjusting, normally check out the honda happiness package fixed priced servicing on the honda website

Its now 7 years old, he wont get any goodwill for a gearbox

How many miles has the jam jar done?
And - has it got full main dealer S/H up until now?

a £500 service must account for a fair proportion of the car's value.

As someone who has bought cars in the market that your Jazz falls into, I would not pay extra just for a dealer service stamp. In fact, I would view any service history as a lucky bonus and I tend to go on the general condition of the car when I decide whether to buy.
Regarding that major service on the Jazz, the dealer charge is understandable as the work involved to replace the plugs and check valve clearances is very time consuming. An independent garage would quote less but, unless specialising in Hondas, might not do these jobs properly or at all.
If you plan to do the service yourself, set aside plenty of time and set your patience levels to maximum. Expect to drop lots of nuts, bolts and washers as you fiddle to refit them.

We used to have a 53 Jazz (now have a 59 one :) ) and £500 is way more than I ever paid for servicing. From memory, low £300's was the highest.
It needs the plugs changing and valve clearances checking every 25K miles but isn't time related, so can be omitted if the car does low mileage. Bear in mind there are 8 plugs but my dealer told me the valve clearances never need adjusting - but they still insisted they had to be checked. If they did remove the rocker cover then it was done without disturbing the dirt or leaving a mark!
I would play some dealers off against each other. Don't know if all dealers do it, but ours included a year's Honda breakdown cover which is a useful saving as it's really wifey's car and I wouldn't run it without some kind of cover in place.

At 66,000 miles some slight valve clearance adjustment was needed on our Jazz.
To remove the valve cover, the throttle mechanism and inlet manifold have to come off along with the air filter box and various pipes, wires and brackets. The 8 plugs are much easier to replace once all all this has been removed.

Car has done 56611 miles
I am aware of the gearbox, warranty issues but touch wood no sign of it.
Car was a company car so serviced by my company's fleet since new, so as not dealer serviced, if the gearbox was an issue would almost certainly be used as a get out.
So looks like the replies are in agreement, I'll dust of the spanners and buy a haynes manual !
On a different subject, posted the same query on 'The dark side' and zero replies over there !!

Yes, he often replies over 'The light side' as well.
You could always get an Almera ~ www.car4play.com/forum/post/index.htm?f=2&t=1619
If your Jazz has always been serviced by the pain dealer then its wise to carry on with that policy,
but if thats going to mug your wallet to the tune of £500, then it would be even wiser to go elsewhere.
