Can anyone recommend a dealer in East Yorkshire to buy an ex mobility car from ? I think they seem to be excellent value - I prefer to buy close to home
|
I've bought ex mobility from BCA auctions before. I would have thought that the majority go to auction before being bought for used dealer stock. Had some great savings and great cars.
|
Sorry not in your area, but I have just bought one, end of lease with 20k miles, spotless inside and out and way out of my price league as an impoverished pensioner when it was new.

Be very careful. I've walked away from a few, their 'keepers' seem to have a cavalier attitude to care and servicing.
|
Thanks for the comments. Perhaps from auction these are some of the good buys dealers have ? Seems there are bargains : but need to be careful.

We bought a minter ex-motability for Mrs F 4yrs ago. The best ones went to main dealers (where we bought) the rest were traded/auctioned.
|
Bought a Clio, Focus, Almera, and a Lancer, all automatics, from a dealer who specialises in ex-Motability jamjars no where near E. Yorks.
They were all 2-3 years young, low mileage, and in eggellent condition.

Fenlander, which main dealer did you buy from please ?

Citroen. I had a couple of Citroen dealers in Cambridgeshire looking out for a specific car/year and both were in touch with motability who only bothered to offer main dealers the best cars.

Nowt wrong with the ones I bought or have seen at BCA.

I don't live in your part of the UK but have had a good experience buying an ex motobility car from a dealer in Suffolk who specialises in them. It was a 3 year old VW Polo TDI Estate. I ran it for 8 and a half years before trading it on. It cost me routine servicing, the back part of the exhaust system, a battery and at 100k miles two new front discs and pads. That was it. The car never let me down or used oil and averaged 60mpg. One the best cars
I 've ever owned. I would certainly consider an ex motobility car again.

Try to get one bought direct by the dealer from Motability - these will be the better ones.
Any poorer ones are put through auction. If the dealer is a good one they should be able to find a specific model on the Motability website and get it in for you. At least then you have the best chance of getting one of the good ones.
As a Motability specialist I have seen all too often the state of auctioned ones!

Cargiant in West London do ex-motability cars. I bought an excellent ex-motability Mazda 6 from there some years back (not my current one).
|
Thank you everyone. There is a lot of worthwhile advice/experience shared - appreciated.
|
I bought an ex-Motability Citroen C4 Grand Picasso a few years back from Pentons in Poole. I only had the car 3 months before trading it in due to chronic back-ache I got from the seat. Never had the problem with any other car. Apart from that the car was fine, certainly clean and well maintained by its first keeper.
|
Thanks for letting me know of your experience. Having a car that is good for back health is very important to me.

As a Motability customer - I've had 3 lease cars- just be aware that like most companies they are under pressure to reduce costs and have made cuts to the servicing schedules.
The lease is usually 3 years/60,000 miles but the policy now is that they don't get the last service done if the car is a few months away from the end of the lease.
Example - My last Volvo was due the 50K service 3 months before the lease end date and
I was told by the dealer to check with Motability before they would accept the service booking and indeed I was told not to have the service carried out. The car went back with 56K miles, the service being 6K overdue on a 12,500 mile service interval.
Not a big deal I agree - but the point is the ex-Motability car you buy made be due or overdue a service and one should check and factor this into the price.
Similarly I now have a VW Golf 1.6TDi and the supplying dealer set the service regime on the OBC to "normal" mileage servicing (ie 10,000m or12 months whichever the sooner).
However when I took the car in at 10K, the dealer informed me it was a mistake and the Motability policy was for "Longlife" servicing on all VW models and consequently the car was returned without a service being carried out and the OBC reset to 20K/2yrs.
I will do about 18K miles pa so this car will go back after 3 years with about 54K miles covered and only having had 2 oil changes (at 20K and 40K).
The Motabilty scheme is excellent for the disabled customer base and the cars coming off the fleet are usually good due mainly to the light use most are subjected to but just check the service history.
|
I have seen the service record for the one I have just bought, It was on annual services due to its low mileage, (8,000pa), the third one was not done by Motability but the dealer I bought it from serviced and MOTd it before delivery. I also have free MOTs for the length of my ownership if they do the servicing.
|
>> for the one I have just bought...
Forgive me if I've missed this elsewhere but can I be nosey and ask what have you bought?
|
Thank you. Some key details for me to consider when buying.

You did not miss anything, I was waiting for someone to ask.
It is a Hyundai ix35 2.0 CRDI Premium Panorama 2x4.
Delivery will be towards the end of next week as it is Northern Ireland registered and it has to be transferred on paper from DVNI to DVLA.

Missed the edit:-
Believe it or not the DVNI and DVLA databases are not linked and it has to be a snail mail paper transaction. Also not helped by all the regional DVLA offices having been shut down.

Sounds good. Didn't BobbyG get one of those recently too I want to think?

I just hope the power operated glass roof doesn't leak onto the heated leather seats. :-)

My Qashqai had a full length glass roof. Didn't open at all, much to my chagrin, but it was still very nice to have the extra light in the cabin.
Used to give me the collywobbles hefting the mountain bikes on and off the roof mounts at weekends though ! As in one mistake would have been fairly inconvenient at all manner of levels.
|
I am a bit past skis and bikes on the roof, the front half is tilt and slide, the back bit fixed. Knowing me I would open it into a roof load and smash it, as the front bit slides over the rear bit. I have seen that done (not by me) with a washing machine in a hatchback and the hatch window slammed onto the load.
|
My father in law did that years ago when he went to buy some wood from B&Q. The wood, it turned out was about 1cm longer than the inside of his car, he slammed shut the hatchback and got the remains of back window and the lower half of the hatch of his Citroen AX on his toes.
If you remember, the top half of an AX hatch is all glass so when that goes, everything goes.
I was with him at the time. It was really really hard to keep from collapsing in hysterics !
He was, understandably not in the mood for levity.

Ouch! That must have taken some self control, not sure I could have managed that one. :-)

As I found out as the car that had been 2ft behind me for the preceding 18 miles finally ran into the back of me, 20 or so year ago
Once that happens, you cant even leave the bottom half of the hatch in place, as the only thing to retain it is the catch mechanism, which wont hold it
Mk1s had a plastic lower half tailgate, bonded onto the lower half of the window - later versions had a very light metal frame around the window, but I doubt it would have made any difference

Yes, that would be shocking!

Thanks for the tip, at my age I had better not stray too far from the "Facilities", a short circuit through my dangly bits is not a pleasant thought. :-)

Uncle Albert, Humph is right, welcome to the ix35 club!!
I have the same car except its 4x4 - will be interesting to see what mpg you get with yours being lighter with the 2WD.
Found out quite a bit of useful info so far, things like media pack software updates that you can do yourself, maps updates (although I believe they still don't have the M74 through Glasgow on them).
And if you park the car outside in the winter, get yourself the snazzy Hyundai windscreen cover, does front screen and front side windows!
Give us a write up with your thoughts when you have time!
Where did you get it, Motorpoint? What colour?
