 Peugeot 306 - Peugeot 306 Cabriolet - Boxsterboy
My wife bought one of these new in 1995. It was a lovely car, but she sold it 2 years later when she set up her business. I recall it had wonderfully precise steering, little body roll, and was comfortable. All in a most attractive Pininfarina body.

Ever since then I have toyed with getting one as a summer weekend toy. Apparently fair ones (50,000 or so miles) can be had for £1,000 or less. I know they can have electrical faults, but for that money, I think they are a steal, and seriously underpriced. Or is it just me?

Does anybody think I am mad?

I owned three 306TD tin tops, all had excellent handling and superb ride comfort. Far from mad, a good one would make a great weekend toy.

Don't think so, you'll pay more than that for a good one. A genuine 50k one will be nearer £2k. Your less than £1k one will be a clocked shed.

I know 2 people who have had long term ownership of 306 Cabriolets - both have experienced hood mechanism problems. Difficult to find anybody who can understand and repair. Forget main s tealer s! Parts for mechanism I believe are not available and it is only worth considering if you are totally capable at DIY with a good machine/work shop.

I have a standing instruction to both owners that when the hood fails completely I will take the car off their hands for a nominal fee:) If 2 come up in the same week I will PM you.

I remember hiring a 306 and nearly having an accident exploring the handling - I found its limit!

Just as well I never tried a 205, although some here may call that a mixed blessing?

Someone will be along soon and say that if you really want a summer weekend toy it would have to be a Westfield.

Aye well...they might indeed.

I'm currently grappling with a leaking bottom radiator hose connector on a 306.
They don't use ordinary joints and jubilee clips, but an awfull plastic twist-grip thing like a hoover hose, which breaks. Also it's inaccessible, half-way inside the inner wing.

But they last well. Ours (saloon) is a 1997, goes well after 150,000 miles, with no rust.
But it rattles, and the handbrake is poor even after adjustment.

Best front wheel drive chassis ever in tin top form. They a reminder of how inert and rubbery modern equivalents are. Lovely, weighty, direct steering, a lovely "tippy-toe" feel when cornering hard, with the nose feeling anchored to the ground, and the rear end almost skating over the road surface. Lovely supple ride as well.

I would love to say this was nostalgia and rose tint, but I drove a fit XSi a year or so ago and it was a far nicer handling car than my F30 3-series.

One of these days I will buy myself a GTI-6.

>> Lovely, weighty, direct steering,

It doesn't suit me, but the wife and daughter seem to like it.
To me, it seems to have too much self-straightening. If I try and let the wheel just run through my fingers when straitening up in a low-speed turn it spins suddenly back to straight ahead and a bit more. Not very relaxing, but perhaps that's just normal with front wheel drive, I wouldn't know.

I bought a 306 XTDT from a woman back in the 1990's

I eventually sold it on to a woman.

Nuff sed.

>>>grappling with a leaking bottom radiator hose connector on a 306.

If that bottom connection is the type with a push on o-ring seal connector and plastic locking device they were always my most hated radiator type to swap.

I'm not quite so rose tinted about the 306. They were a great handling car in their day with a fair amount of urge with the old 1.9TD and I worked on loads of them. However 15yrs on there are many post 2000 cars that are better.

I last had contact with 306s about 5yrs ago and even then those mid/late 90s cars were starting to get a bit tired/rattly.

After working on a 106 for years, I would never wish to work on another Peugeot again.

The Japanese design cars - largely - to facilitate maintenance.

The French design cars to facilitate electrical failures and make repairs very difficult. Or so it appears.
