Best fuel consumption app for android - Dulwich Estate
I'm wondering if it's time to drop the little note book(s) I started in 1972 and instead to tap away at my phone after each fill up.

Any recommendations, please ?

Probably time to stop full stop. What on earth is the point. Fuel consumption is what it's is. No point in obsessing about it.

Well you got the first bit right ;-) Really 1972?

I think most of the apps are all pretty good. Never personally bothered with them.

Not only that

......and I also note down how much toilet paper I use each time. I then log the colour and consistency too. It might be useful one day.

You ask a question and then they take the pi55.

Rattle - I take my hat off to you and admire your staying power.

Do you also keep logs of gas boiler consumption for hours run, dog food consumption for miles walked, water consumption for showers taken, etc. ?

Huh - they contributed in their thousands to a thread about whether or not they'd cut their grass for the last time ……………. and then they extract the micturate when somebody wants to talk about fuel consumption on what is basically a motoring website ……………

I'm proud to announce that I keep fuel records as well, DE, but I enter the information onto a spreadsheet. I see it as one way of monitoring how the car is performing.

Tcha!

OK, I concede that OCD is a personal problem and takes many forms. :-)

I find that a quick mental calculation of miles travelled v litres added gives me a ballpark mpg which matches the cars computer and confirms that the car is performing normally.

I like to think that I would notice a problem with my car without having to fill it up to find out.

"Do you also keep logs of gas boiler consumption for hours run, dog food consumption for miles walked, water consumption for showers taken, etc. ?"

Not exactly that - but I log the water meter monthly ever since my neighbour received a month's water bill for £850; the builders had damaged a water pipe when back-filling a trench; my water pipe is in the same trench. And instead of just moaning about a N Power electricity bill, I was able to ague the toss with confidence because I had the monthly meter readings in front of me.

I suppose there's no need to check tyre pressures with one of those gauge thingies either - a bit of dodgy handling usually gives the game away if you're a good driver….

OCD? ………. or common sense? :-)

OCD definitely. :-)

Have you tried tapping that little button on end of indicator or wiper stalk which gives ave speed, ave mpg, instant mpg, outside temp, range etc?
It's accurate to about 10% ish? Saves on pencil lead.

You could enter your data at fuelly.com. Use an Android device or anything else to do so.

How about FuelLog?

What's the point?

Most modern cars have trip computers which shows average fuel consumption and instant fuel consumption. That is good enough for most people.

Otherwise you can enter fuel and mileage in text form in your phone and then import that data to Excel and do fancy graphs/charts.

“That is good enough for most people.” I am not like most people and like to keep my distance.

“Otherwise you can enter fuel and mileage in text form in your phone and then import that data to Excel and do fancy graphs/charts.” Tried that but it's too much hassle when an app can do it all for you.

By the way, it's not just fuel consumption - it's car related expenditure. I needed some way to note when I did things to my cars – I never got such a thing as a service receipt as I never went anywhere near a garage. Rather different now though.

Some random examples:

July 1975 - 1 gallon 4* petrol @ 74p

1 gallon GTX engine oil £1.85, oil filter £1.12

Insurance – 3rd party, fire and theft. Annual premium £22.23.

November 1975 – Clutch plate, pressure plate and release bearing £14.63

Don't tell me that's not interesting on a motoring forum.

More use on a history forum. :-)

As I said,

I am not like most people and like to keep my distance.

Why ? Read the post above. Miserable old git with nothing better to do than carp on and on.

DE, I keep all my car expenditures including fuel, on spreadsheets. I recently signed up to Fuelly.com where you can keep a note of all the expenditure.

Although it is quite good, I thought it would have an APP to do this from my phone but surprisingly it doesn't so I think I will just stick with my spreadsheet.....

Why not? modern systems are reasonably accurate, mine is +/- a couple of mpg, nothing is absolutely accurate.

Refueling database is an Android app which will record cost, amount filled, date, time and has a note section if you want to record which fuel you used.

It also has a maintenance section where you can record servicing, MOT, tyres costs etc...

Refuelling is useful for diagnosing when faults are occurring on an older car which cannot be explained away by seasonal change. You can see a pattern emerging which is not evident with the instantaneous or average over the last 9999 kms with the onboard computer.

Whatever you pick, if you have kept records for twenty years, and are likely to keep them for another twenty, find something you can be confident will still exist two decades down the road. Think about whether an Android app will store your data in a form and place that will remain accessible or transferable. Probably not something proprietary from a tiny startup.

The paid for app I mention above (FuelLog Pro) allows you to export the data to a CSV file.

I keep a fuel log too. Not as sophisticated as some - I simply note the mileage on the fuel receipt and then record the result in my homebrewed spreadsheet. This is how I know the Octavia is almost 5mpg better than the Focus was, despite being bigger and more powerful.

>>allows you to export the data to a CSV file.

Which, in case you didn't know, allows you to import the data into many different applications including Excel.

I suppose for those that don't know, I should have said a CSV is a Comma Separated Values text file which as you say can then be imported into all sorts of other programs including a spreadsheet.
