Some time ago there was a discussion about the bouncing LED effect. This morning I saw a really marked effect in my mirror on the variable speed signs over the motorway on the opposite carriageway. They appeared to be bouncing independently of each other. Can anyone explain why this is only apparent in a mirror?

The LEDS have a scan rate, the mirror has a vibration rate, and if they are harmonically sympathetic you get the strobe effect you see.

The same explanation, I think, for the reversing tractor wheel effect I have sometimes observed in a mirror.

Sounds reasonable, throw in the eye refresh rate as well and its a wonder they ever remain still :-)

Time may speed up with age but at least my long term memory isn't failing yet. :-)

Sometimes very weird artefacts when viewed on TV.
