It's the same company doing the haulage in the Daily Mail article. It must have cost quite a bit.

I wonder how many driver changes are needed as the lorry drivers are limited by time.

I bet there wasn't enough pull over points. he he

Can someone please explain? "The transformer will next be transported by sea to Cottam power stations near Retford, Nottinghamshire"
Oxford to Bristol then by sea to Nottinghamshire?

You can get from the Humber estuary to Cottam via the navigable Trent.

There are two power stations at Cottam, the newer CCGT one being constructed in the 90s. According to Wiki, some of the heavier plant was taken there using the inland waterways to avoid road damage.

It's being shipped back to Siemens in Germany for a refurb.

Maybe it will then go on to Cottam. I thought it odd to move it by sea... but at 10mph it would take a long time to get to Cottam power stations on the roads.

The actual unit doesn't look that big to be 640 tonnes - wonder how much the rig and truck make up of that weight?

My b-i-l used to work for Abnormal Load Engineers in Stafford - I had great fun playing with the remote controls of the truck things that could spin on their own axis.

I'm surprised at how physically small the transformer seems compared to the tractor/trailers.

transformers don't need to be big to be heavy. The construction of the things, heavy laminated steel, loads of heavy copper cable means they are heavy beasts. It will have been drained of hundred of litres of oil as well to make it as light as 640 tonnes.

A 4.3 metre cube of steel would weigh 640 tonnes. It won't be solid anything, but it looks quite a bit bigger than that. Copper weighs about 12% more than steel.

FWIW a cube of steel weighing 640 tonnes would have sides of approx 4.3m (if my maths are correct).

EDIT: snap
