 Jaguar S-Type - Mould etc - Westpig
I did something very silly...and...put my old Jag in a shed in January, on a Sorn, and forgot about it.

Dug it out last week..and you've never seen mould like it, there was layers of the stuff, some of it in a powdery form. One of the carpets was damp, so I'm surmising it was wet when I put it away. I've now changed the door rubber on that side as I found a good split in it.

It's taken me two days solid to clean the leather up to an acceptable standard (with Johnson's soap, courtesy of advice from Stu on a previous thread).

There's marks still on the headlining and seatbelts...and it stinks. The leather still has the odd faint mark in some places, but 95% of it has cleaned up. There's also some rust showing through the paint on the door speakers.

Any ideas on the headlining, I don't want to get it too wet and have it sag.

On the plus side, it's just passed its MOT and looks really, really good for a 14 year old car (apart from the above of course).

First year we owned the present MB we wintered it under a breathable cover, but the mistake i made, and i suspect yours was to not leave enough gap on the windows to allow the interior to breath adequately.

The leather did clean up OK but there might be the odd mark if you look really hard at the rear centre armrest (folded up and thats what got the worse mould), headlining wasn't affected probably as it never had a chance to cook in the hot weather.

Best bet with the headlining IMO is to let it dry fully then vacuum it well, hopefully that will remove most marks and then a gentle cleaning with foam upholstery cleaners, well thats what i would do.

No doubt our resident expert Stu will be along soon to tell us exactly how to sort this.

Yes i could have kicked meself too.

Welcome to the West wet country, we didn't know what mould was until we lived down here :(

Same in this part of the west. When I scrapped the Mondeo a few years ago the rear windows had long since ceased to open because they were encrusted with mould.

Oh heck WP that sounds a bit of a mess. I wonder if you should also consider setting off one of those aircon "bomb" canister thingies in it too. Supposed to kill nasties trapped in the heating and ventilation system. I might, though I wouldn't claim any expertise, try to clean the headlining using one of those clear liquid anti-bacterial sprays you can get for cleaning kitchen surfaces. I'd most probably spray the liquid onto a clean cloth and wipe the headlining with it. Might be disastrous of course...

Alternatively, take the car to a pro valeter. Probably worth paying to have done right if you're going to keep it.

...using one of those clear liquid anti-bacterial sprays...

Careful with those. The Dettox one we've occasionally used on feline indiscretions will bleach colour from fabrics and carpets. We've had to consider that the lesser of two evils and WP may be in the same position.

Our household antibacterial spray is 1/3 water, 2/3 spirit vinegar, and a couple of drops (literally) of washing up liquid. We use it on kitchen surfaces. Can't see any germs ;)

It's in a Gardenline trigger spray. Vinegar does kill mold.

I would have suggested you were exaggerating WP, except that I've seen a car that bad. About 11 or 12 years ago I was persuaded by a friend to store a front-damaged Pug 405 in the rather tatty garage at the end of my garden. They left it in there and we didn't even open the garage door for a good few months, but when we did we found the whole (black, cloth) interior absolutely covered in green and white fluffy mould. Everything. Dashboard, seatbelts, carpets, the lot.

Well done for cleaning up the Jag, I didn't even want to touch this one.

EDIT: >> aircon "bomb" canister thingies

Good call. That was the most effective agent against the labrador pong which came with the Saab.

I store my Fireblade in one of those carcoon tent things, in the shed at the end of the garden. Come spring the whole thing was covered in mould.

When I put my Landcruiser away for the winter, I close all the windows and put a dehumidifier inside. It's onlt needed for autumn and spring, as once winter is here the RHD is very low and stays low.

I've got fairies at the end of my garden.

You need a dehumidifier ~ not a bag of water-absorbing crystals, a proper electrical dehumidifier.

He needs a flow of air - I bet if the shed/garage is left open it will be fine (assuming not nicked) - or even just leave the car out but give it a good wax every 4 weeks or so.

Garages = rust and mould magnets.

It's an old stable block. I got a mate to to take out some internal walls and an outside panel and use it as a sort of tunnel garage and car port for the one at the open end.

My old Triumph is at the far end, the S Type in the middle and wifey's X type has the car port. I've opened some of the stable doors to get a good flow of air through to the car port bit..and now keep the S Type's windows open a good inch.

The Triumph has never caused me a problem. The S Type must have had a seriously wet carpet, because the Triumph has been parked up damp before.

Mushroom leather interior?

:-)

Sorry !

I hope it is not an early X type.
Due to the design and a fault they can really rot away.
I have never seen a car with the sill and a good part of the A pillar gone.
Later models are OK.

2005?

There's no sign of any rot, inc underneath and I always poke around under there at MOT time. I am quite pedantic at keeping my vehicles clean..and use a polish shampoo (not that that would stop rot from underneath, I know).

The good news is that you have a later one so AFAIK the problem no longer existed.

X type has a nose down stance. Apparently water is channelled down inside the A pillar and out through a drain hole ( in the sill). Problem seemed to be there was no drain hole so trapped water ensured the rot.
The photo on the USA Jaguar site IIRC showed very bad rot up to windscreen level.
Virtually impossible to sort that mess out.

Stance also ensures crud collects in the corners just behind the rear window . Some folks have added a small drain tube each side for the water to disperse.

Surely the leather will now need "feeding" now you've stripped out some of the oils in it? www.furnitureclinic.co.uk/Leather_Care_Products.php
