Looks to me like something a chav would do after winning the lottery, but each to his own -

Its an e type. Where do we go from there?
The Prettiest Car in The World? - Stuu
It is nice but I wouldnt fall over myself for it. The Rothchild Hispano-Suiza V12 is more my thing, had a picture of it in a car book I got as a child and have loved looking at it ever since.
The Prettiest Car in The World? - WillDeBeest
Awkward-looking thing. The wheels look wrong in the arches, the exhaust looks home-made, and how is a Personal of Proper Size (i.e. me) supposed to fit through those doors?

The F-type looks nice, though. I'd rather have one of those, please.
The Prettiest Car in The World? - L'escargot
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I don't like the side view of the roofline from the windscreen right to the back of the car.
The Prettiest Car in The World? - IJWS14
Doesn't quite look right to me, original e-type far better as is the MX5 (excepting the current version).
The Prettiest Car in The World? - BiggerBadderDave
I'm a Jag lover but just never found beauty in an E-Type, unless it's a drop top - then it's truly gorgeous.

Prettiest car in the world? Pretty means pink with bows and I wouldn't drive it.

The most handsome car? Magnificent proportions, jaw-droppingly powerful yet elegant and graceful?

This is my choice.

'Concourse of Elegance'? Sigh.

It's a shame the world of classic cars, which now bores me rigid, can't move on from its obsession with the E-type - a bathtub on wheels if ever there was one.

I'd skew that a bit to a new Continental.

I was in the family home village the other week where there's always something a bit special about and took a photo of a superb Continental GT in met silver/gold carrying the private plate of a lady. Like this one...

Vokswagen Bentleys don't do a thing for me, a bit too footballer/celebrity.

Love older Bentleys though particularly S3, and Arnage which is one of the best looking cars ever made IMO.

I too never found the E type anything to write home about, V12 versions improved it somewhat thankfully, give me a Mk11 3.8 or original S type anyday.

The Prettiest Car in The World? - BiggerBadderDave
Mk11 3.8 or original S type? No thanks GB, if you're talking about classic Jag saloons - this is what I want, need, adore:

I haven't seen one in the flesh for about 25 years but driving a Jag 420G is top of my 'things to do before I die" list. (after I've done Kate Bush).

When it comes to pretty cars I've yet to see anything I consider better than this -

You like them fat and flabby I see. Pondered divorcing the wife and going for Bulgarian fish porter?
The Prettiest Car in The World? - BiggerBadderDave
Don't care if it's fat, don't care it's flabby. So long as it shaves all over.

I wouldn't fancy sitting behind that steering wheel if the car was moving ~ no airbag.

Perhaps not for 40k/yr swift business miles but I reckon you'd be OK for a waft round the lanes now and again.

Here is the interior of the one I looked after.

Lovely car that and you can see its had some serious money spent.

Confess i'm not a great fan of such new looking refurbishments, prefer then after a couple of years or more of use when they look better to me.

Is the car still in service and still in condition?
The Prettiest Car in The World? - BiggerBadderDave
"i'm not a great fan of such new looking refurbishments"

Me neither GB. I like something well used, a bit battered but gives immense pleasure. (Like a MILF).

Something like this would be perfect for me. Of course the oily bits would have to be perfect though.

>>>Lovely car that and you can see its had some serious money spent. Confess i'm not a great fan of such new looking refurbishments...

To a certain extent I agree something a little more worn might appeal. However this was a no cost spared rebuild... and its purpose when I was involved was to make a daily use driver for a lady. To this end it had been fitted with some non original parts like inertia belts front and rear, rear fogs, high level brake light, concealed (mostly) modern stereo. elec seats and even a tow bar for taking the camping trailer to the tip.

The Prettiest Car in The World? - Fenlander
Putting the name Volkswagen in front of that Bentley doesn't undermine it one bit... still a superb vehicle. Sadly idiots with money could be said to undermine nearly anything you'd desire as they can so easily afford the suff of ordinary folks dreams.

>>>Mk11 3.8 or original S type anyday.

I used to maintain one of the nicest 3.8 S-types in the country which had been the subject of a £20k+ restoration. Of course it was nothing like as refined or comfortable as my C5 or as rewarding to drive as the Alfa... but it did make you feel special just to walk up to the door knowing you had the keys and were off out in it.

288 GTO for me. I have stared at this shape on and off for 25 years, and to this day I can't think of a single detail I would change. Achingly beautiful, and a stark reminder of just how much Ferrari has lost the styling plot in recent years.

I like those French jobbies that AC likes, the ones with impossibly long flowing bodywork and louvres, but I can't remember what they're called, so I'll link to another favourite.

Form following function often works well - I saw this car a few weeks ago before it was delivered to its new owner.

www.dkeng.co.uk/ferrari-sales/363/Blue_Chip_and_Competition_Cars/Ferrari_196S_Dino.html

There's a 288 in the blue chip section of that site too. The front looks incongruous to me now - out of fashion - truly 'right' designs shouldn't look less good with the passing of time.

I like and desire cars of every description. I wish I could afford to shop at Coy's. There are quite a few dazzlingly beautiful cars, but they aren't necessarily the best and my own tastes run to the rough-looking and even the ugly. Nevertheless I fall head-over-heels for the real beauties of every decade since 1900.

Among the several quite nice-looking motors one sees on the road, one of my real favourites is a recent Maserati, two or four door, preferably not too impeccable in appearance.

There are quite a few about in my old manor in North Kensington and the Gate, where I was slopping about today. Many are driven by women. They're quiet too, not noisy like those damn Aston Martins they have these days.

I know they have a tiresome side but I would quite fancy one in an ideal world.

Agree with DP 288 is a fine looking machine though the foglights/driving lights look an afterthought in 2013.
F40 would be my money no object car. My minor lottery win would be a Lancia Stratos HF in Alitalia colours. I know there are Hawk kit cars out there with more powerful Alfa 3.0V6 which could do the job of show but a Lancia with a Ferrari 2.4 litre 12V, the only 2 wheel drive to beat an Audi Quattro !!!

I don't care what a car looks like. It's how it functions in relation to the price which matters to me.

So you choose a car with the same criteria as a fridge freezer or vacuum cleaner?
The Prettiest Car in The World? - Avant
A 1939 Lagonda drophead (as they called them then) would fail L'escargot's and WdB's tests, but pass every other. It would get my vote as I love art deco - maybe we all have a penchant for things made in the decade before we were born (I was born in 1948).

While looking at this thread found the Lancia Stratos Zero which immediately made me think of the Pink Panther cartoon series car which Pink Pankther and the Inspector used to arrive at the Chinese theater at the start of the show when I was a nipper in the 70's.

There are people round here with nice motors. This afternoon passed going the other way an earlyish thirties (but RR) Bentley open tourer, black, probably 4.25 litre but not overdrive... well tasty. They are magnificent machines, especially the lightweight ones.
The Prettiest Car in The World? - Ted

If we're talking Rollers, Lud, I always think the prettiest of the old ones was the 20hp. I think it was the only RR to have horizontal radiator slats.

My neighbour and old school friend had a 1927 Thrupp & Maberley limousine which he bought in very shabby condition and restored nicely for his wedding car business. He had a couple of 20/25s as well but they always looked a bit more ' brutal ' to me.

I'm pretty certain this is the same car. I have a photo of it with us all at a show in the late 70s. The reg number is out of picture but it sure does ring a bell. I've sent him the link...he lives in Bulgaria now !

>> If we're talking Rollers, Lud, I always think the prettiest of the old ones was the 20hp. I think it was the only RR to have horizontal radiator slats.

A friend and sometime employer of mine inherited a Rolls-Royce 20 open tourer from his parents, who were Cambridge dons. I went in it once and it was very pleasant, if rather too relaxed for me in those days. I would like it better now.

The Twenty's horizontal radiator slats were connected to a thermostat and opened and closed to help regulate cooling. I believe some early vertical-slatted radiators had the same arrangement, but could be wrong. Also not quite sure whether it had front wheel brakes, but I think not. What it did have was a central gear lever controlling a 3-speed box. The right-hand remote gear lever was adopted later along with four-speed gearbox.

It made a subdued purring whine when going, like Marge Simpson worrying about something. Indeed all Rolls-Royces make a similar noise, from inside anyway.
The Prettiest Car in The World? - Fenlander
Interesting several here have a connection with the Rolls-Royce 20.

Here is my Dad's 20 outside my grandparents house. It was the car that carted me around in my early days. No need for a car seat... the old 1950s pram fitted easily in the rear compartment.

Swallow Doretti.
The Prettiest Car in The World? - Armel Coussine
>> Swallow Doretti.

What made you think of that ambo? It was a nice looking car actually, far better looking than the TR2 whose running gear it had. Wasn't a success though. A bit expensive perhaps.
The Prettiest Car in The World? - Armel Coussine
I think your family's 20 was a later one than my ex-employer's because it definitely has front brakes, and I think wider tyres and rims. The open tourer also had the radiator slats, though not the shell, painted black like the rest of the car.

However detail memory can play tricks after 30 or 40 years, so I could be wrong about any of this. Don't think so, but it's possible.
The Prettiest Car in The World? - Robin O'Reliant
Whatever people may think of Rollers, pretty is the last word I'd use to describe one. They're a sort of Jordon of the automotive world, big and brash with everything exaggerated, but no Pippa Middleton.
The Prettiest Car in The World? - Armel Coussine
There are some quite pretty and restrained ones RR, although I agree that even the smaller ones are quite large. The very earliest Royces included a two cylinder model and a three-cylinder model, with a similar radiator shell but honeycomb instead of slats... they're incredibly rare though.

One pretty and restrained one I used to see was a Phantom 2 short chassis six-light saloon, beautifully proportioned late 20s/very early 30s car and absolutely enormous. It too belonged to an employer of mine, a woman actually. It was her London daily driver believe it or not.

Are the tyres supposed to be that bald, FL? Is that what they were like in those days? Or is it a trick of the light in the photo?
The Prettiest Car in The World? - Ambo
Armel, you ask why I nominated the Swallow Doretti as the prettiest car. I thought it was outstanding in 1955, when I saw one for the first time in a Singapore showroom. The only time, in fact, until today, when I found a short article with a photo in the June (60th Anniversary) issue of Classic Cars, part of a review of a rally of examples of all the TR derivatives produced.

Only 276 Dorettis were made, in 1954/55. It seems to have been aimed largely at the American market and the name was derived from that of the US distributor. The Swallow company was owned by Tube Investments. It was a good car but at the behest of the boss of Jaguar, who must have had influence in the matter, it was withdrawn as being seen as a competitive threat to the Jaguar marque. The price was £1102, when the TR2 cost £887; equivalent to £25,550 and £20,600 respectively today.

Having seen the photo I think I overrated it and must now change my nomination to the MGTF, last of the MG Midget series.
