New Berlingo arrives on Tuesday. We know it will be delivered as KY63XXX but plan is for it to take the 'family' plate currently in the old one - which will become mine. My 'lingo will then get an age related plate, presumably the KU05 one it had originally when new.
I've got all the changeover formwork but do I need to wait for the full V5 for new car before sending stuff off to DVLA?
Ideally the 'private' plate would have gone on retention first but the Xantia being condemned as unsafe meant we lost the month we had to play with.

Not sure what you mean by condemned as unsafe - was your MoT withdrawn?
I got the dealer to transfer mine a couple of years ago, and pay for it - the Outlander went straight on to the cherished number.

Yes, the dealers have always done the business on the one family personal plate.

Because the plate is still on an active car - the older Berlingo - the dealer wouldn't do the change. Would have been OK if it'd been on retention but apparently current DVLA timings/complications make it too much trouble with a 'live' reg.
As regards the Xantia I was aware for a few weeks that suspension was over firm and for those insured to drive (SWMBO & Miss B) I insisted it was restricted to 10 mile radius of home and 40 mph.
However it got worse last week so I sought advice from my trusted Indy. They said it was dangerous (remember the worn shock absorbers public safety film?) which is what I mean by condemned.
At that point I'm not willing to allow SWMBO or Miss B - who was using it for work and to collect me from station - to drive it at all.

A few weeks ago my son traded in his SLK for a S/H M3.
M3 owner wanted to retain its no plate. Son wanted his SLK plate for the M3
The trader did it all for him.
The trader had no glass palace so the answer is ? :-(

My dealer arranged for my registration number to be transferred to my new car. They got DVLA to allocate a new number (it was a Swansea number with the same year identifier) for my old car, and fitted the new number plates to my old car while it was still in my possession. They made and fitted the new plates in about ten minutes, while I waited. I think the charge was £80 for DVLA, plus £25 for the new plates. All I had to do was inform my insurer of the change of number.
|
Last change we had the dealer didn't want to get involved, historically it could be done over the phone/mail but now it apparently means a trip to the DVLA local office.
We ended up with a 61 plate for a week and the dealer delivered new plates which I fitted after they got the transfer sorted out.
Make sure the car the number is on now is still taxed and don't give up the V5 with that number on if you are selling.

The nearest DVLA office to my dealer is 42 miles away, but it didn't cause a problem. The car they got me for a test drive came from a dealer 40 miles away. My dealer's policy is to keep the customer happy.

DVLA have closed or are closing their entire local office network. All seems to be done by post. If they need to examine a vehicle they will give instructions on how to arrange -presumably either through VOSA or an MoT garage.
I'll ring them later and get a steer. As I'm keeping the car that currently wears the plate there's no danger of it being lost.

As of July what local offices that remain open are not processing reg transfers. if you pitch up to one they will simply post on to Swansea.
And at the moment Swansea are not processing quickly. My advice - put the plate on retention, take the berlingo on its 63 plate and do the transfer at your leisure afterwards. Also means you can claim back any refund on the current tax disc first.

Thanks Peter. We are retaining the car with the personal reg but want to move it to the new Berlingo so there's no tax to reclaim. We're just going to put all the paperwork and forms in post once we've got the V5 and let Swansea's wheels turn.

I don't understand what the problem is.
My old car was allocated a new number appropriate to its age by DVLA ~ CT03 XXX (CT is Swansea), and the car was then fitted with plates bearing that number by my dealer. My new car was then registered with the original number of my old car. Isn't that what you want to do?
My dealer arranged it all and it cost me £80 for DVLA to allocate the number CT03 XXX, plus £25 for the CT03 XXX plates for my old car. All in all it was a doddle.

Thing is L'es, he hasn't traded in the old car with the cherished number on it. And having bought the new car in a hurry, and it no longer being possible to do it over the counter, easier all round to do it himself when the new car is on the road and he has the V5.
A simple assignment from a number on retention took nearly 4 weeks for me recently. When I rang DVLA after a fortnight they said they were 15 days post in arrears.

I use the retention system. When I know I'm going to get rid of a car, I put the number on retention and then transfer to the new car at leisure, once I've got it. Costs a few quid more but you can control what you want to a large extent.
I'm sorry about the local offices going...ours, in Old Trafford, was really good with helpful, friendly staff and very little waiting...for a big city !
The last time I went in I needed to do 3 things on the new Vitara. 1 Transfer the old one's number, 2 Change class to ' disabled ', 3 Cash the old tax in and get a new free disc. They did the whole lot at once very efficiently and quickly for me, issuing a new MOT and disc on the spot.

It all worked fine in the end.
New Berlingo was collected on 03/09. Slight delay as I'd lost the older one's MoT and had to wait or a duplicate. All forms sorted and posted to DVLA on Sat 7 Sept.
Confirmation of change, together with authority to issue new plates arrived in post on Tuesday 17th. Oddly they came form DVLA Beverley (ER) rather than Swansea. Older car was reverted to its original 05 plate same day. New one's plate swapped for family plate today while it was in for 1k mile checkover.
Over all, efficient and painless.

On a prevision thread's theme...
I've mentioned before that our original 2005 Berlingo was notionally named Enrico after Enrico Berlinguer, the Italian Euro-communist of the seventies.
The new one was given local reg KY63FLR so Miss B decided 'her' name was Fleur.
Both will, I suspect, stick.

Not that I've ever called a car or bike anything but mentally the GS is called Adolf. Not after the Adolf you all imagine but Adolf Galland the fighter pilot - lean, mean, ruthlessly efficient machine that it its !

I've never given any of my cars a name. They're just inanimate objects.

Icalled my VW, "HERMAN" 'the German.
