No surprise at the car makers..

I would have expected to see ignition coils figure highly among that list, but what do I know.

Those would just be replaced Dog, and not repaired. I'm surprised by just how many failures are attributed to ECU's.

Probably lazy journalism.
The list doesn't show what the ecu fault was: could be dozens of different faults demonstrated by an ecu signal.
I had an intermittent cutting out problem on my 2.1 Transporter many moons ago, I let a Bosch 'specialist' that I knew have a look at it and he diagnosed a faulty ignition module.
Turned out to be the main ECU which I diagnosed by using an oscilloscope.
A new ECU cost me 500 notes, and that was 20 years ago FFS!
I suspect that most of the makers listed above do not make their own ECU's but they are bought in from specialist manufacturers such as Bosch, Lucas etc.
The only manufacturer I know who makes their own modules is Ford and they don't figure in the list!!
Isn't ECU a generic term for electronic control unit, in which case there's usually a few on each car, not just the one that controls the engine.
Willing to get that a big chunk of the "faulty ECU" brigade are faulty Bosch ABS/ESP controllers.
I would have thought that "faulty ECU" was top of the list as that is about all that they fix.
Lists like this from a specialist repairer have little value other than maybe spotting a poor manufacturer rather than generic component failures.
Faulty ECU, is a bit generic, which one? cars have many these days.
Japanese cars missing from the list too.
