What strikes me is the clumsiness of the guy's actions. He knew his licence had been revoked - how on earth did he think he'd get away with it? And when faced with the prospect of legal process, he pleaded not guilty - and gave evidence. One can only imagine what a mess that must have been; the judge said of him, "I reject Mr Pope's evidence. I don't find him to be a witness worthy of credit on any matter that's not to his advantage." Although he must have retired a while ago, at the age of 65 his brain hasn't deteriorated that much, surely?

1 licence revoked and another on a ban will make life inconvenient, up to a point. Still they are about 5 miles out of Dundee and their town has a railway station. I wonder if 5 miles is actually far enough to be out of Dundee? Before the tolls were abolished it was free to get into Dundee from the South but you had to pay to get out - there's a message there

Intelligence and stupidity are not mutually exclusive?

Intelligence does not equal common sense.
