I've done that. I think Vauxhall columns were designed so the top bit with the wheel would snap off if someone was trying to break the steering lock.

My job was a Mk2 Cavalier in a local multi storey...about 5 floors up. I knew in advance what the problem was so I went in the service van. No chance of getting the transporter up there ! I used the mole to drive it out, parking it where I could get at it with the truck later.

The owner seems quite amazed that it could be done at all.
