London to York this afternoon, A1 or M1? - Mapmaker
How are the various widenings, roundabout removals and other roadworks interacting between the two roads down to the North?

Thanks

I can only comment informedly on the stretch of the M1 from London to the bottom of the M6 but the Luton roadworks flow ok now. I rarely use the bit from Catthorpe north but it can be very busy on a Friday pm from memory.

IME if you leave London after 10:00am on a Friday you're going to hit heavy traffic, whichever route you take. I expect even more people will be taking advantage of a sunny weekend.

I'd check traffic situation and play it by ear.

Cqn only comment on the A1 yesterday Newark to M25, peachy - clean as a whistle.

Don't know about southern end of M1, not been down there since December.

Will be busy in usual places, MK to Catthorpe, round East Mids connurbations and between 33 and 35 round Sheffield. So far as I can remember no major roadworks atm between J16 and J33 but the odd short 50 where they're doing patch/mend to bridges etc.

As I mentioned in a thread the other week the speed cameras in the Nottingham/Derby four lane/VSL section now appear to be active. They were certainly flashing s/b traffic a couple of weeks ago.

The M1 seems to be prone to sudden, unexpected delays - probably because, when traffic approaches saturation (as it does in quite a few spots), the slightest problem has disproportionate effects.

I think I would lean slightly towards using the A1.

Seconded.

Northbound? Friday? A1.....

A1 every time, much easier to get off and divert if it gets clogged, many more places to break, much less boring than the ugly M1, similar journey times when both clear.

I'm normally somewhere fearsome like the M1 / M6 on a Friday afternoon, but this afternoon I'd like to say a huge thank you to whoever invented the long life batteries on my laptop, my cordless phone and the designer of our very comfortable garden furniture...Bit warm now to be honest, might go for a swim later. It's a hard life...

Second that - A1.

Stop here for a well deserved break when you get to York.

Thanks.

Google traffic was showing A1 'heavy traffic' and M1 'light traffic, so I went for the M1 route. It took ages to get as far as the very bottom of the M1; after that point I flew.

But Google had been showing bad traffic around Loughborough all day. And the overhead signs were agreeing as I got close to Leicester; meanwhile the bit around Leicester was also sticky, the matrix signs saying 30. So I dropped onto the Leicester ringroad, and joined the A1.

It's a six and two threes sort of route; post M1-widening - and A1 de-roundabouting - there's not that much to choose, I think.

Getting from the M1 to the A1 via Leicester is a bit of a trek - I have done it a few times. The obvious route is A47/A43, or maybe A607, if you're going north. It's not quick and it's such a big dog-leg you might have done better using the A1 the whole way.

Difficult call.

Wouldn't the A46 to Newark make more sense, if they have stopped digging it up now?

I have a cousin at Bingham - A46 always used to be quiet, but when I went up last year there were road works delays.

I have some family in/around Bingham too. Hasn't all the work on the A46 finished now?

This place is quite pleasant in Bingham. I was in there on opening day.

"Hasn't all the work on the A46 finished now?"
Pretty much so. It was finished some time ago, though having finished it they then put millions of cones along it to do something, I know not what. I frequently use the road and I never saw a workman or machine near these cones and they disappeared after a few weeks.
Very good route now - only slow bits (in rush hours) can be Hobby Horse roundabout north of Leicester and near Newark where they seem to have been changing a roundabout for the past many years.
Only couple of minutes delay at most though.

I missed this thread on Friday because I was stuck in traffic on the M1...

The choice between A1 and M1 comes down to your preferred cruising speed - the A1 is largely two lanes each way so more opportunity for speed merchants to get baulked by 50/55mph traffic shuffling its order about. The M1, as mentioned above, takes very little to go from 80mph to a complete standstill especially on a Friday.

The A46 is indeed all done, all clear dual carriageway with only the Hobby Horse island to slow you down between M1 and Newark - and even that has a freeflow slip lane on the northbound side. The last couple of miles around the Newark bypass can get a bit congested, as several A-roads converge at the handful of roundabouts along there.

I similarly mssed the thread Friday,

We live in the Midlands and have family in the North East. We stopped travelling Fridays many years ago because they both grind to a halt Friday afternoon/evening. Less stressful to travel early Saturday morning
