I knew of them in France (they are often used by drivers who have had their licences removed for drink driving) but hadn't realised that a 16 year old in the UK (or indeed, anyone with no driving licence) can buy one of these and legally hit the roads...

I guess the only limiting factor is insurance?

I wonder, if I lost my licence for drink driving, could I get insurance for one of these?

Loads of the beastly things in southern Spain. Mostly driven by old geezers with flat hats and a ciggy hanging from their lips. Never taken a test I guess. "Slowly Worm" in metal and a big reason for impatient car drivers to scream past at the most inappropriate places.
The youngsters there, many without the legally required "casques", ride "motos": equally beastly buzzing scooters (often with straight through exhausts) all the while specialising in wheelies down residential streets. (Only a slight exaggeration :-)

Ten grand for a car with a top speed of 28mph.

Somehow I don't think we'll ever have to worry about them catching on.

There is a similar scheme in Sweden, where you can drive a 'tractor' at (istr) 14. The 'tractor' is usually a cut down ancient Volvo Amazon that is limited to 30ish mph. The limiter is installed by welding a bar across the gearbox gate so only the lower gears are available.

I was in a Belgian garage some time ago, giving a mate a lift to pick up a car. The garage sold these things and being Belgium, diesel ones at that (single-pot I think).
Someone was collecting a new one while we were there and during proceedings, they opened the bonnet to reveal the thickest sound-deadening mat I've ever seen. Then they started it up and I understood why.

Now. You know those mechanical "engine onna foot" things they use to tamp down small roadworks.......?

Just tried Confused for insurance.

My age, Comprehensive. £579 to £1555. Putting in an imaginary birth date for a 16 yr old pops a message up ' you cannot be under 17 or over 95 ' .

I don't think we'll be seeing many schoolkids owning them.
