Hiring a car in France - zuave
Morning all,

I haven't hired a car in France for more years than I care to recall.
However, in the next few weeks SWMBO and I will take a short break in the French Camargue. Flying into Nice and rent a car from there.

Assume the hire car will come with all the required legal bits and bobs...safety vests for those who require them, breathalyser (if still required) etc etc?
I have a separate annual insurance for excess etc. which cover She and I throughout EU. So, is there anything else I need to be aware of?
many trhanks

NB - did a search for Hire car France and got nothing, hence the question.

I will come with all the required bits and bobs to make it legal, but you will probably be required to make a refundable deposit for those said items.

Certainly did the last time I hired a car, in sicily I think.

OK Zero, seems logical, I can work with that:-)

Have you tried googling 'foreign car hire'?

The monesupermarket type websites will point you in the direction price comparison sites.

I use Holiday Autos the last time I went abroad. Arrived late evening at destination airport to be told 'we have your booking, but we've no car for you. Hire one somewhere else and reclaim your money on return to UK'. I won't be using them again in a hurry!

I get very keen prices and good service from Argus Car hire, who seem to be a broker, like Holiday autos. Example, one week hire of a Punto in May next year, pick up and drop off at Verona is £127, one driver age 70+

I do not use a broker any more.

I want to know which company I'm going to use - and one which has a desk in the airport, especially if I'm arriving after dark. I don't want to be met by someone with my name scrawled on a bit of cardboard and then taken in a minibus some distance to find my car. In that kind of situation there will also be a hassle when I return and there may be no-one to check the car and I may have to get back to the airport under my own steam.

I'd rather pay a bit more.

How much I worry about the supplier depends on when I arrive.

If late / dark / dodgy then I'm right with FocalPoint - someone with a shop front in the airport please.

On the other hand, on a non-pressured, easy, middle of the day arrival I'll use anyone.

With Argus you know who you are getting the car from; I usually get an Avis car. Last year booked a Golf and got a Skoda Yeti and last month I booked a compact and got nice diesel Punto which is a compact!

I'm stuck using Europcar through our corporate policy. Probably had 12 cars in France last year, and from memory they all had a bag on the front seat with the required stuff in

Thanks Mike, that seems to be the definitive info:-)

I have actually booked the car and got a good deal, for France. It was just the "extras" I was curious about. I will take a copy of my own annual "excess (+ a few other bits) policy". Just wondered if there was any biyarre French extras they may try to charge me for over and above the usual extras that Hire Co's tend to push for.
Thanks again

Hired from Hertz in Nice and in Toulouse last year with no problems. Returned a brand new C4 with the boot release broken; shoulders were shrugged and nothing more heard. Pointed out that the Meriva in Toulouse was not quite full of essence but receptionist just marked plein on the form and again nothing more heard.

Both cars came with alcoometers and high viz jackets for which no deposit was charged. AFIK there was a small charge if the alcoometers were used. I used my own insurance4cars policy and this was accepted without problems.

Hi alfalfa....quote" I used my own insurance4cars policy and this was accepted without problems".

Used your own insurance how so? Please a little more detail, was this insurance an excess policy or what?
Thanks
Zuave.

Hi Zuave

insurance4carhire provides excess cover on an annual basis and is cheaper than paying for excess and additional cover at the car hire desk. When I was asked if I wanted to pay the extra for full coverage I showed them my policy which they seemed familiar with this.

Hope you have a good holiday.
