Anybody live near Bristol? How's it working out for you?

On the face of it this sounds like a good idea. Our nearest town would benefit enormously it were permanent, but it's tiny and you easily walk where you need to be in a few minutes, and anyway, half of it it's closed off half the time anyway.

Still, a few Sundays like Bristol might make people think it's possible.

Gosh, didn't even realise that Ferguson had started this - it was only a few weeks back that he suggested it.

The roads that are closed are not major ones, but still have a good flow of traffic so I guess there will be some disruption. If it stays dry I might take the kids down to see what its like.

The scheme should be of major benefit around big events like the harbour festival as they spill out across kings street and on to queens square

It might be attractive for one day, but a permanent closure would be a pain for a whole host of reasons; businesses, disabled, moving large/heavy stuff. And of course many town centres see a drop in business on pedestrianisation.

Some shops might struggle.

I'm constantly amazed at the unwillingness of people to walk more than about 100 yards, though it's a great benefit to me more often than not.

They were trying to park up the trees in Buxton recently, driving round in circles and queueing for the car parks (chargeable too). Drove half a mile and had a pleasant 10 minute walk into town.

In Cambridge, which might as well be car free for all the progress you can make, I either park at the daughters and walk a mile, or use the park and ride.

Our local mayor wants to pedestrianise our high street (it's the A6 for heaven's sake). He's managed to do it for a few days a couple of times over Christmas for a 'fayre' (sic), resulting in a detour running into double figure miles for HGVs.

Totally impractical in our case.

How to turn a town centre into a hangout for drunken chavs;

Pedestrianise it.

Happened in so many places I know.

Parking fee has driven motorists away from town centers thus brining down trade in High St.

Now they are even planning to drive the remaining crowds away by blocking cars altogether.

Then in 2 years time there will be a committee formed to examine why High Stree is dying.

Some people just can't see!

Especially those that WILL NOT see.
