I just wonder if anyone has any knowledge about the time taken to download a Tomtom map update. I recently bought a Tomtom Start 25 which certainly appears to be a significant improvement on my 6-year old Tomtom One. One of its selling points was 'free maps for life' - and I was notified this morning that a new map was available for download.

I plugged my Tomtom unit into the computer at around 11.30 this morning and, at almost 7.30 this evening, it's still churning away with the download.

I found a reference which suggested that a 2GB download at my line-speed would be around 3hrs and assumed that this 2.9GB download would take around 4.5hrs - but this is taking an age.

Has anyone else on here experienced this sort of thing - is it normal?

Cheers

My internet averages 4Mb and it takes about an hour to download the North Europe map to my TT 720 through the TT Home system.

Thanks, ON, ours was about 1.8Mb (IIRC) last time I looked. The map I'm downloading is for Western Europe.

Maybe it's time I upgraded to fibre optic - but maybe I should ask about experiences of that on the 'computer' section.

PS - It's still downloading after nearly 9hrs!

Is there any sign that progress is actually being made?

"Is there any sign that progress is actually being made?"

There is nothing to tell me how far I am actually through the download, though there ''rotating flower petal' symbols by the items that I am supposed to be downloading and on the 'updating' and 'busy' 'buttons'.

I'd kill it and restart the box.

There is a risk that it might get corrupted, but that's resolvable. I doubt it is proceeding in any meaningful way.

Probably (depending on my patience levels) I'd let it try through the night just in case there's any aggressive traffic shaping going on, but tomorrow morning I'd kill it and restart.

I've just found a reference to the slow download speed on the Tomtom users forum; it appears that it's a common phenomenon. It looks as though I'll have to leave it going all night.

I'm working with a year-old i-mac; it has Eset antivirus installed - but I can't find out how to disable it while I do the download. I'll give Eset a call as soon as they are available.

Success at last!

I switched off the anti-virus yesterday morning, and partially disabled the firewall to allow mytomtom through and so the map download ground on. This morning, 2 days after this thing had started, the daisy petals continued revolving but I doubted that anything was happening. Then, while checking the Cambridge United Fans Forum, the computer froze and wouldn't budge - I had to switch it off and start again.

As it fired up, a box appeared offering me 'MyTomtom for Macs' which was necessary to enable downloading of other files. Now, I thought I had already installed this, but maybe I had downloaded, but not installed it ....... or maybe I had an older version ....... or maybe the original installation had fallen foul of the (subsequently modified) firewall. Anyhow, as soon as 'My Tomtom for Macs' was in place, the map started to download automatically and a box showed the download time information - it took about 2 hours, followed by another 30 minutes or so to install it onto the Tomtom.

Satnav updates seem to me to be one of the slowest and most difficult of any device. Our Garmins took ages. The process is a bit fiddly too and I've seen user reviews where folks have returned as faulty newly purchased units they were trying to update after losing patience.

I guess things has got worse in the satnav world. When I had a standalone Garmin unit, you pulled the update file onto a PC in the usual way from their website, via your browser, so took about five minutes to download. Then copied it to an SD card and popped it into the unit. Done. You didn't need special software or downloaders.

Just another retrograde step in the name of progress I suppose.

I am downloading a 2.5 gig TT map of Europe and it going to take 15 hours! The TT Go Live series is a heap of retrograde junk! My 6 year old 720 has more and better features

"I am downloading a 2.5 gig TT map of Europe"

I suspect we may be talking about the same map, Meldrew. I was downloading 'Western Europe' v910.4891 released 4/2013; it replaced version 9.05. I think it said 2.7 gig on the 'my Tomtom' window.

ISTR reading that new map releases would be issued every 3 or 4 months but, with this much bother, I might just download one annually. After all, I managed to function with the old one, even when the maps were at least 5 years out of date.

This sounds like TomTom either have bandwidth issues or are throttling downloads so it takes for ages. Even on a slow broadband connection, the length of time these updates take is very long!

I still have the same TomTom that came "integrated" with my Altea XL - think its a TT710.
Have had to replace the battery but other than that still works well. The original Seat branded SD card was, I think, only 512MB or 1Gb at the most.

I now have a 4 or an 8 GB card (do you get 4GB cards?) but the maps just seem to get bigger and bigger each time! Which of course would make sense but the size of the increase is sometimes quite dramatic for the same map of the same area.

Could be worse though, could have a fully integrated satnav in your car that the dealer charges 3 figures for an update!

Download time test for European map to an Android phone... About 3.5GB and download about 25 minutes.

Older TTs, like my 720, will not accept high capacity memory cards - they fit but are "Not recognised" - limited to about 4 gb I think!
