My son runs a 2003 Focus with the 1.6 zetec petrol engine. Since he bought the car the power steering has felt 'dead' and chattered on full lock. There's fluid in the reservoir. His previous car had electric power steering so I thought he might be unfairly comparing the two. Then his battery failed and has been replaced. Mysteriously the power steering has apparently come to life and the chattering on full lock is absent. The car steers better and he reports more feedback from the steering.
I'm struggling to see the connection; can anyone offer an opinion?

I have a vague recollection that they have an electric power steering pump.

Beaten by Manatee.
No knowledge of Focus but 'how is system pressurised' was my first question.

My 1.6 2004 focus when i owned it wasn't electric, had a pump driven by a belt which also drove the alternator.
Perhaps the alternator was working overtime to keep battery charged and that was affecting the drive belt turning the steering pump?

Or the belt was slipping / improperly tensioned and affecting both.
